Pretty rad but, I've played a few of these old shmups and now I need to know why the final boss is a fetus for so many of them. Was there really this much subliminal anti-abortion imagery in these things? It was the Clinton administration back then, after all...

I have to give this game a lot of credit for saying there's "three forms each with different advantages" and then actually not be fucking around. "Yeah, sure, okay," I usually derisively say to myself when I go to the most powerful battlemech form and never look back. It was right around when one of the bosses fired black hole bombs at me that sucked me into its center of gravity that I suddenly realized oh damn, oh shit, oh pussy and ass, maybe if I were in a smaller yet faster form I could get out of this trap?!?!?! Good for you, Winkysoft

I know jack shit about Macross, that's the blue singing lady right?

I like this, I like the ship transformations and their cool weapons. This has a similar challenge factor of Thunder Force III, you have to memorize both the stages and the ideal movement and weapon tactics to deal with certain threats. Great for about 90% of the run, has a handful of bosses that feel upwards of quadruple as hard as the stages they inhabit - 1, 6 and 7 respectively. Some real Gradius Syndrome here too. You can definitely learn consistent strats to get around everything, but the meandering pace and aformentioned trouble points mean I probably won't come back to this as often as I do with Thunder Force.

The Macross saga is treated with something akin to religious worship in Japan, so it's nice to see a tie-in game handled with the same reverence. The plot involves giant aliens crashing a ship into earth. When the bad guys return decades later, the vessel is called into service as the SDF-Macross, a massive battlecruiser, defended by transforming fighter jets. That's where you the player come in, taking control of one of the Variable Fighters in a quite stunning shoot-em-up. Extremely underrated, do not pass this up.

"Winkysoft" developed this one. I would think twice about buying something by a company named Winkysoft, but actually this is pretty solid. Some people say this is in the highest echelon of SNES shmups, but I'm not sure I've played enough to agree yet. As is, while this is very nice, I would definitely play Super Aleste or R-Type III instead if I was given the choice.

Speaking of R-Type, you know how the SNES port of R-Type II lacks any checkpoints for some reason? Same applies here. It's actually taken a step further, since you only have one life and rely on continues to keep going, effectively erasing your score upon every single death. Seems like it would be a major setback without savestates, so I would suggest them on this game even if you're not really one to use them typically.

Ok, look. There aren’t many good Robotech games out there.
And while this is Super Dimensional Fortress Macross based, since that is the first third of Robotech, I’m taking it.
Plus, it’s fun and has a decent ost

Horizontal shoot em up based on Macross. Three pilots with a different shot type in the three forms they can use. Each form has a power level between one and three, getting hit lowers you shields and power level. Not firing will put a glowing field around you and touching certain enemies will cause them to fight on your side. Changing forms can make you briefly invincible to most attacks, weapons are all useful. Looks and controls well. Can expect you to know what is coming, and can get extremely cheap in the last few stages.
