Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition

released on Oct 27, 2015

A remaster of Darksiders II

A remastered version of the 2012 release, Darksiders II. Awakened by the End of Days, Death, the most feared of the legendary Four Horsemen, embarks upon a quest to restore mankind, and redeem his brother's name. Along the way, the Horseman discovers that there are far worse things than an earthly Apocalypse, and that an ancient grudge may threaten all of Creation. Darksiders II follows the exploits of Death, one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, in an action-packed tale that runs parallel to the events in the original Darksiders game. This epic journey propels Death across an expansive gameworld as he tries to redeem his brother, War, the horseman blamed for prematurely starting the Apocalypse in Darksiders. Like the original Darksiders game before it, the second iteration of the series is primarily a hack 'n slash adventure. The game takes place across netherworld environments, including 'The White city', an outpost where angels live, and 'The Eternal Throne', a floating fortress where the Lords of the Dead stand guard over souls that need to be cleansed. Although Death is the most feared of the Four Horsemen, his physical abilities are very different than his brother, War. Death is far more nimble, and relies on a combination of melee and ranged attacks. In combat Death's primary weapon is his huge iconic scythe, with a wide range of other weapons and usable items that must be gathered as the game progresses. Weapons can be dual-wielded, upgradable armor can be acquired for protection and Death has access to his terrifying and powerful mount, Despair.

First of all, "Death-initive", really?! Dear oh dear.

Anyway, Darksiders II follows Death, the Hot Topic brother of War, who sets out on an adventure to prove that War didn't start the Apocalypse in the previous game but almost immediately gets sidetracked by a gloopy black tar called Corruption that is spreading across the cosmos. Whereas the first game was a Zelda-clone, Darksiders II is more of a Diablo-esque action RPG. The combat is a fast-paced hack-and-slash affair and everything in the game sheds loot for Death to pick up and slap on himself like a haphazard amateur armourer. Watch out though because it's easy to break the game as it struggles to keep up with your damage output! Much bigger than the first game, Darksiders II gives us a bunch of open world stages with quests to find and collectibles to hoover up, although the budget clearly ran out towards the end.

The opening and first couple hours of this game has a special place in my heart as it was around the time when I had just started to tune into the Video Game sphere, following news and actively checking out trailers and such. Large part thanks to me watching a lot of Let's Plays, this at release being one of them.

I really like the art style and in general the "edgy" Legend of Zelda take. But it definitely feels a bit padded and I kinda lose my rose-tinted glasses after you leave The Forge Lands. It might be a tad unfair to compare like this, but having just played Hollow Knight I just can't help but feel the wonkyness in these controls and how unsatisfying the platforming at times feels.

Great addition to the series improves the movement and the combat although I enjoyed the story of the first game a little more.

If you aren't fucking with Darksiders 1, I doubt this is gonna change your mind. I know this game has weapon variety so thats dope, but fuck me man these games need a sprint button or just fucking faster or something.
