Darksiders: Warmastered Edition

released on Nov 22, 2016

A remaster of Darksiders

Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War – the first Horseman of the Apocalypse – stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between Heaven and Hell. In the slaughter that ensued, the demonic forces defeated the heavenly hosts and laid claim to the Earth. Brought before the sacred Charred Council, War is indicted for his crimes and stripped of his powers. Dishonored and facing his own death, War is given the opportunity to return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible. Hunted by a vengeful group of Angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vengeance and vindication.

Ruim demais.

I have never really understood the appeal behind this game. To specify, I get why you could like it, for its art style and story, but the gameplay is some of the most random slap dashed mushed together experiences I've ever played. At its core, it plays like a generic Zelda title where you travel the world, go into Dunegons, get a key item, fight a boss. But it also has hack and slash elements to it to try and differentiate it

But then it also is like a Metroid style game where you wanna go back and revisit old areas to find new items.

THEN, it has Portal Puzzles. So what are we doing here? This Zelda Metroid God of War Portal clone? How do you describe this game? There is incorporating many styles for variety, but then you get a game like this that does none of them particularly great so you're left with this mess of a game that throws in many things that don't click.

It's not like it's all bad. Mark Hamill being your companion and yelling at you for most of the game is fun. I like the monsters and the world. Visually it's decent. But I also don't ever want to play it again because I'd rather just play the games it's copying instead.

The angriest game about bureaucracy you'll ever play. Darksiders' plot concerns the Apocalypse being called too early and War is held responsible for it. Sent to Earth a century after humanity has been eradicated in the wake of the war between Heaven and Hell, War is tasked with finding out who actually started the early Apocalypse and bring them to justice. There's a lot more going on here, but none of it is past surface level guff - Darksiders is sort of like if a Warhammer 40,000 fan decided to discover theology but through the medium of mid-90s comic books. It takes its lore seriously, but there's little substance; it's just sour faces gurning at each other and mumbling about the cosmos.

Gameplay is more or less lifted from the 3D Legend of Zelda games. War lumbers around the decaying ruins of human civilisation, occasionally trundling his little legs into dungeons, solving some puzzles until he finds a new item, which is then used to beat a boss. Combat is fairly straightforward; it works, but it lacks depth and feels kind of stodgy as War moves at roughly the speed of a bloodsoaked glacier. It's also one of those games where every idea has been cherry-picked from better games, which is especially apparent when you get to the dungeon that gives you a gun that shoots blue and orange portals.

A perfectly playable, utterly average game.

The series has a lot of personality and ended up winning me over with its theme, story, and exceptional level design; however, being a remaster, I expected some improvements in quality of life. And what a cliffhanger for the next game at the end!

Amazing story and plot progression, but the gameplay felt lacking in today's day and age
