Dominos

released on Jan 01, 1977
by Atari

Gameplay is a variation of the snake genre, in which players compete by surrounding each other with lines of dominos. Players change direction via a set of four directional buttons representing up, down, right, and left respectively. A player loses when they hit a wall, their own dominos, or their opponent's, at which point all the dominos in their line "fall" down.

This is Tron but not as snazzy. Honestly, the domino aesthetic is cute and watching everything fall over at the end is fun. The clack of the dominos is satisfying. However, the AI just isn't very good and beating the AI is quite trivial. Perhaps this is more engaging against a real human. But, for being such an old game, it's neat, but not an arcade game I feel any draw to return to.

Competitive Snake, basically. Simple-simple. I like that it does animate (insofar as you could animate in a 1977 video game) every domino falling over, all the way back to the start.

Not much else to say, but if I were around in '77, there's a good chance this might've been one of the first video games to really hold my attention. Simple but effective.

Fine for a messaround for all of five minutes in multiplayer before you just wanna move on. Single player AI is a dumb as rocks too. It's basically compilation filler for Atari.
