Energy Breaker is a tactical RPG in which you play as Myra, an amnesiac young woman with a thirst for adventure. The story begins with Myra being visited in a dream by a mysterious woman calling herself Selphia, only to meet her in real life the next day. On the advice of Selphia, Myra heads to Eltois, the Wind Forest, hoping to catch up with a man who may know about her past. Shortly after arriving at the Wind Forest, Myra joins up with Lenardo, an old scientist who's hunting for the Reincarnation, a legendary flower whose scent is said to have the power to bring the dead back to life... Energy Breaker utilizes a Tactics Ogre-style battle system, but it also allows the player to freely explore the world. It also includes character designs by Yasuhiro Nightow of Trigun fame.

Game Review - originally written by Spinner 8

This game is gorgeous, with a really distinctive isometric graphical style to everything. I can't get out of the first town though, so that's really all I can tell you.

First off, kudos to the group of independent translators that made this game possible for a wider audience. Never had I heard about it until this year.

And what a treat.

The sprite artwork is great, with super emotive animation - some of the best I've seen on the SNES. That and the dioramas reminded me a little bit of Super Mario RPG. (Bonus: although all the characters mostly share the same skill pool, some characters have different battle animations for the same skill. How cool is that!)

Story-wise, you can expect much of the typical JRPG fare, but the characters and fantasy/sci-fi setting offer a ton of distinction that elevate it above many other games.

The tactics battle system has a bit of a learning curve, but once realized, is super rewarding. Other than that, the inventory system is pretty frustrating and could use an overhaul.

I'm just so glad I got to experience this lost gem and I encourage other folks to do the same!

A pretty ballin J-RPG and S-RPG hybrid with some STUNNING spritework for the SNES. A bit unfortunate the gameplay systems are a bit confusing at first (namely learning spells), the game isn't particularly well balanced, and the story is a mess (though I like the characters), but the throughline of all of these aspects is that Energy Breaker is just a fun experience. And sometimes that's all that matters
