Fantasy

released on Dec 31, 1981

Fantasy is a simple 2D arcade game. The main hero must rescue his girlfriend as she was kidnapped by pirates. After the rescue, other hijackers appear all the time - the hero is busy non-stop. Each level is different - ballooning, pirate ship, jungles, a village full of savages ...There are no buttons to interact with - only the joystick. Most of the time, the hero must avoid the enemies - but sometimes (for example in the village), he can automatically use a sword.

Each level has a different layout and flow to it similar to various games of the time, but you mostly spend time avoiding enemies, or sometimes kiting them into other enemies' projectiles to kill them. It's got some creative audiovisual flair as well, I just wish there was more to the combat.

Perhaps unintentionally one of the most entertaining things I've played in a long while. The belly laugh I got out of starting the game up, hearing one second of the music and then immediately getting blasted to shit in dead silence was incredible. Near equal one in the last level where you instantly get shot by an apparent scrotum gun. Incredible comedic timing all through. Even beyond that, this is a pretty wild and varied collection of some fine arcade action. Definitely the most captivating of the bizarro 80s arcade oddities I've played.

Somehow managed to accidentally grab the version without the voice acting, so I was unfortunately deprived of hearing the funny ape noises :( Still had funky town tho ftw

strange game, but oddly charming. There's a lot of different gameplay styles that the game switches around between, which is honestly pretty crazy for its time. Add some really cursed voice samples and you get yourself... well, you get yourself something.

“How are you?”
“I’m fine, thank you.”

How can something this old feel so modern? I swear that this plays like of those late 2000's Newgrounds flash games. Unlike basically any other arcade of the time, it doesn't adhere to a specific gameplay and instead throws you into different challenges that are still pretty easy to grasp onto (most of them are about moving left or right anyway). For this game alone SNK deserves to be remembered as one of the great arcade houses of the 80's. It also helps that it has a bonkers presentation (which includes colonialism, pirates and a full-frontal assault to the London bridge).

Tight-crisp arcade action that appeals by virtue of the fact it breaks a ton of video game conventions that hadn’t even been set yet. Resplendent with crunchy voice acting charm that you really gotta hear!! Every level is soundtracked by the jankiest Funkytown cover you ever heard and you can piss off your friends by going “Oh? Is this the game Shrek 2 was based on? 😏” Wanna live in the alternate future where this was the 1981 breakout hit instead of Donkey Kong.
