Fighters Destiny

released on Jan 26, 1998

You can choose from more than 10 characters and enter the ring in the ultimate hand-to-hand competition. Rather than using a two-out-of-three format, you must score seven points in order to win a match. Knocking down your opponent, forcing him out of the ring, or throwing him to the ground score anywhere from one to four points. Try to beat all of the other fighters in the Master Challenge, where a victory results in you learning their fighting skills. If you face the Joker, you must beat him or you will lose the skills you have gained. See how many opponents you can beat before giving up seven points in the Survival mode, or try to see how long you can stay in the ring with a fighting cow in the Rodeo mode. Keep your butt off the ground to win at FIGHTERS DESTINY.

Even though I’m not a fan of fighting games, I can tell that this one is something special, at least compared to all the tedious ones released before this on the N64. This has some interesting ideas and feels like it was designed for a console due to the modes it included.

The key part of Fighters Destiny is the point system. You have to be the first to seven points and different methods of defeating your opponent gets you different points: pushing them off the giant block you fight on top of nets you 1 point, a throwdown move gets you 2 points while preforming a special mode (via a ridiculous combination) get you 4. This means people are trying different tactics rather than just whittling down health.

There are also a bunch of different modes to keep people interested. There’s a rodeo where you have to keep in the fight (against a cow) for as long as possible, a survival challenge and a timed mode. There’s also Masters Challenge, where you can earn more moves for each character (on top of the already immense amount they have) and can move these via controller pak to a friend’s house.

It isn’t for me, but Fighters Destiny stands out above the other fighting games on N64.

Bem básico. O diferencial é que cada forma em que o oponente é derrubado tem determinada pontuação, quem conseguir sete pontos primeiro é o vencedor.

One of the most uniques fighting games you can play. The point system is such a great idea I'm surprised no one else haven't tried it again. Now I'm not gonna call it a masterpiece or anything, but it's qualified to be called a hidden gem.

It bothers me how people will call anything underrated but the fact that I can count the times I've seen this game mentioned in one hand is criminal. One of the most original fighters I can think of

if you love fighting games its serviceable but not that good

Just an incredible idea for a fighting game, of going for a performance-based points system. Of all of the attempts developers have gone for in their aspirations of making A Fighting Game For Regular People, that this idea remains untapped is a real shame.
