Musashi Ganryuki, known outside Japan as Ganryu, is a platformer and hack and slash video game developed by Visco Corporation and published by SNK in 1999 on Neo Geo MVS. It is loosely based on Miyamoto Musashi's fight with Sasaki Kojirō. Sasaki went by the fighting name of Ganryū, hence the game's name "Ganryu Musashi". The game's selectable characters are the samurai swordsman Miyamoto Musashi and his female kunoichi counterpart Suzume. The mission of the game is to rescue Musashi's love Otsu from a clan of evil ninja led by Kojiro Sasaki. Players are armed with a sword (katana for Musashi/kaiken for Suzume) and a grappling claw. The claw serves as a long-range weapon, and can act as a grapnel in certain settings to reach higher ground or ascend over chasms. A powerful projectile attack can also be achieved by holding down the attack button, although this takes time to charge. Additional temporary weapons can be found throughout the game, such as shuriken for Musashi, kunai for Suzume, and an "energy ball" weapon. Upon rescuing hostages, rewards are given to the player in form of food (onigiri, takoyaki), which can restore health, or ryo coins for extra points.

Its fine at best. Honestly was quite let down because the game looks great and the boss designs are honestly really awesome I dig it. The sound effects for slashing enemies is good but the core gameplay and level design just wasn't fun at all for me.

This game is a side scrolling action game where you have 2 weapons plus skills you pick up and use. You have a katana which is your main weapon , a hook that can act as a weapon and 3 types of skill weapons you can pick up. The skill weapons consist of Shurikens, fire bombs and orbs. The only worth while skill upgrade are the orbs as they SHRED through enemies and more importantly will evaporate bosses. The fire bombs are literally useless as they are incredibly hard to actually hit enemies with and can always damage yourself. The Shurikens are good for level play as they one shot most enemies but fall off during boss battles as they don't do much damage then.

Movement is fine at best I was not a fan of jumping as it most of the times can leave you open to getting hit. You cannot aim your katana strikes or any moves for that matter your only option is swing or throw in front of you or behind you making some areas annoying where you would need to walk down a slope or when there would be crouched enemies. Because of this moving through levels was really not that fun and borderline annoying at points due to Archers and red ninjas which were more powerful.

As I mentioned bosses looked awesome but the fights themselves were nothing special as most of them consistent of Aerial projectiles with more enemies coming at you from above. Hell the final 2 boss fights were literally a walk in the park due to the Orb skill being borderline broken in boss fights.

Overall I am torn because from the surface the game looks great but I simply just wasn't that much of a fan of it. I don't think its a bad game by the stretch and hopefully I enjoy the sequel more!

it's amusing to use grappling hook as spiderman in this game. it has satisfying melee attack and horrendous boss designs (but in a good way)
