Labyrinthine Dreams

released on Apr 02, 2015

Labyrinthine Dreams is a short puzzle game about Beth, a young woman who is standing at Death’s Door. After a traumatic childhood and a tough entry into the world of adulthood, she was just starting to take control of her life. However, she is now up against an insidious enemy who threatens to take everything away from her. During what may be her final hours, Beth wanders through important moments in her life while also staying a few steps ahead of the monster who won’t rest until she is no more. Mazes in dreams are said to symbolize the dreamer’s feeling of “being trapped.” As Beth tries to find meaning and strength in her life, players must guide her through a variety of mazes, each with its own twist. The most challenging sections are reserved for confrontations with the monster, who must be outmaneuvered and outwitted to proceed.

Listen, I don't know if the puzzles present here are like, a genre of their own that I've never heard of before, but dear lord was this game painful for the twelve minutes I could muster from it. It's so fucked, because the game tells you a tad of how the movement scheme works (I think?), but because it's this weird RPG Maker game, I genuinely thought the explanation was more of a whimsical flavor text thing than anything else. And because the movement system in the room you spawn in was normal, I genuinely did not expect nor know how to deal with the first puzzle. I kept thinking 'why can't I go here, why is this room full of invisible walls, are the hitboxes that bad?' going around in circles and getting stuck in places that didn't make sense at all, wondering why my key-presses weren't doing anything. But whatever, I've learned other puzzle games before, so this shouldn't be that hard... I thought. But no! There is no consistency that I could see in how you're supposed to tell what directions you can walk on any given tile without mashing all the keys.

And to top it all off, the voice acting just alienated me for the short time I spent with the game. Also, why does all the text take up only half the space per line in the text box, but also all left-aligned to the corner?

Labyrinthine tries it hand at serious and relatable subject matter, but it's patronizing solution and annoying puzzles make it one of the worst games I've played this year.
