Metroid Planets

released on Dec 31, 2019

Metroid Planets is a Fan Remake of the 1986 Nintendo Entertainment System game Metroid created by vacantshade. It updates Samus' movement and adds a saving system, among other features. The game is called Metroid Planets because of its multiple maps. Planet Zebeth is a remake of the original Metroid. Planet Novus is a whole new map with new bosses and new areas. Selecting Planet Enigma will bring you to a room creator and a map generator that uses those rooms to create a world. (If you go to the Discord linked in the game menu, you can download a room pack and upload your own rooms.) The game also has online multiplayer.

I'm inflating this a bit because it's a really solid fan recreation of a game I don't generally I care for. That said, the little QoL changes make it so the game is much more manageable.

For getting me to play a game close to the original I think this deserves a good score.

Just finished 100% Zebeth mode (the recreation of Metroid NES) and got up to 25% of Novus, amazing little game, the QoL changes made to the original are enough to push me to finally beat it. Will come back another day to finish Novus for sure.

That day came a month later, finished Novus at 83%, had to look up how to do a certain thing because for the life of me I couldn't find how to proceed (the answer was two walkable spots on the map, my least favorite way of hiding things). Has some welcome surprises and some pretty well hidden expansions, because I explored 94% of the map and still had like 1 tank and a lot of missiles to go.

Metroid 1 with a map and some other neat QOL changes. I had a hard time getting into the first metroid due to getting lost a lot. This made me enjoy the game a lot more.

Planet Novus completed with 100% item collection. Metroid Planets is a highly impressive fan game, firstly presenting a fairly faithful remake of the classic NES Metroid, but going far beyond that in a remarkably complete package - as well as just some usability improvements while maintaining largely the same graphics and sound, there's an entire new campaign, completely remixing the game world with a significantly higher difficulty, a randomiser, new boss fights and much more. The gameplay still feels relatively basic when compared to later official Metroid games, but that's a deliberate choice to maintain a level of faithfulness; if you're looking for the classic Metroid experience, without the much more extensive changes introduced by Zero Mission, you won't find any better option than Metroid Planets.

i haven't yet completed this or tried the variety of its unique modes (classic zebes, a revamped version of the original game set on a new planet, a randomizer, multiplayer, and map creation...!) but i have played enough that i really think this deserves more attention. it's such a polished update to a somewhat dusty classic that if there were any justice in the world, its developer might be paid by nintendo and a port released for the switch. it's not any kind of dramatic overhaul like zero mission by any means... it feels more like the nes game had been ported to pc engine and now it's got some more modern additions. really, really cool.
