This game is actually pretty good I got way more out of it then I expected great late NES game

Cute and accessible, but not tightly designed enough that I'd play it over other beatemups. Still, the presentation, easy difficulty, and solid mechanics make it pleasant enough to play.

Well, for being the game meant to follow up one of the better beat-’em-ups of the late 80’s, Final Fight 2 was… certainly a Final Fight game alright. There was nothing wrong with it in terms of the mechanics, graphics, controls, or what have you, but not only did it add nothing new to the gameplay from the previous game, but also just felt like a repeat of what came before, making the game feel like a “nothing” sequel. But either way, you would probably think the next logical step to go after this would be with Final Fight 3, right? Well, not exactly. Before that game would come out two years after FF2, there was another Final Fight game that released beforehand, which not too many people knew about due to the fact that it was another late NES title. This entry in the series was known as Mighty Final Fight.

This game was somewhat of a different twist on the typical Final Fight formula, as rather than being a standard Final Fight game, it was more so a parody of the series, having a similar art style and sense of humor to both Kid Dracula and Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti. This simple fact alone made me really excited to jump into this particular entry, since I am such a huge fan of both Kid Dracula and Wanpaku Graffiti, so I figured this game would be similar in quality to both of those titles. However… that’s not quite what we got here. What we did get was a pretty good Final Fight game, and a pretty good beat-’em-up on the NES, but in terms of matching the same potential that Kid Dracula and Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti had, it just misses that mark. May be unfair to compare this to those games, but too bad, that is what is happening here.

The story is the exact same as the one from the original Final Fight, except it is now told in a much more comedic fashion, which is something I did end up liking, and I’m sure any fan of the Final Fight franchise would find the alternate story silly enough to get behind, the graphics are really good, not only having plenty of detail for stages and character sprites, but also having plenty of very well-done animations, giving off the exact vibe that Final Fight should be going for, the music is pretty good, given off the same vibes as Mega Man with a hint of Double Dragon thrown in there, which is something I could really get behind, and it was nice to listen to, the control is exactly what you would expect from a beat-’em-up, so moving on, and the gameplay is mostly what you would expect from Final Fight, but with a little bit of innovation thrown in there that makes it not as stale as other entries in the series.

The game is your typical beat-’em-up game, where you take control of one of the three characters from the original Final Fight, or if you are a normal person who likes having fun, you play as Mike Haggar and nobody else, go through five different stages that span across Metro City, beat up every single dude or gal that comes your way to prove that you are the baddest dude to walk these streets, gather plenty of food items or weapons to give you an advantage over the many thugs that you will face, take on plenty of bosses that will fuck you up if you are not ready, and go through several bonus stages to get additional continues. It is mostly about as standard as your typical 90’s beat-’em-up can get, but it still manages to give the same sense of fun, beat-’em-up gameplay that one would expect a FF game to give, which is all any fan of the series could want. Not to mention, unlike with Final Fight 2, there are actually some changes made in this game to keep it fresh!

The main change that was made in this game is that now you have a leveling up system, where the more you beat up dudes, the more experience you will get, and you will eventually level up… if that wasn’t obvious enough. Whenever you level up, not only does your health bar get increased, but you also get stronger attack power, and you even get brand new moves that you can test out against your enemies. While it isn’t an original change or really all that innovative, it is a nice feature to have, and you do somewhat feel like you are getting stronger as you level up. The only downside to this new feature though is that the level requirements are pretty strict. For example, in order to reach Level 5 for Mike Hagger, you have to get 190 experience points, but in order to get to Level 6, the final level, you need to get 370 experience points! Considering how enemies only give you around 2-10 EXP every time, this is almost impossible to achieve when playing the game normally, which does kind of suck. That didn’t necessarily ruin the experience though, it was just something that needed to be pointed out.

Despite how much this particular Final Fight game has going for it, there are still some things that greatly hold it back from being truly fantastic. For one thing, the game lacks any 2-player mode, which does really suck, especially when other games on the system, like Double Dragon, were easily able to manage this, and yet this game somehow can’t. Secondly, for being a game that is supposed to be a “comedic” take on the original Final Fight, it isn’t really all that funny. I know this may be a bit of a stupid complaint, but there aren’t any real funny moments throughout the entire game, with the only two there being found in the opening and ending cutscenes, which was a little disappointing. If it had a little more of that in here, like with what they did for both Kid Dracula and Wanpaku Graffiti, then I would probably like it a whole lot more. And finally, if you aren’t drawn in by the chibi art-style or the experience system, then there isn’t much else here to make this game stand out from others in this genre. Although, that last issue didn’t bother me as much as with other games, like say, Final Fight 2.

Overall, despite a lack of co-op, a lack of major innovation, and a lack of funny, Mighty Final Fight is still a pretty good beat-’em-up, a great one for the NES, and it definitely blows FF2 out of the water in terms of charm and enjoyment. I would definitely recommend it for those who are big fans of the Final Fight series, as well as those who are big fans of old-school beat-’em-ups, because this game should give you plenty of what you want, while not lasting too long to not be a waste of time. It’s just a shame though that I am slowly running out of these chibi-parody old-school games to play… parody games made by the same company as the original is a dying breed, and that is a crying shame.

Game #453
