Off-World Interceptor Extreme

released on Nov 01, 1995

Off-World Interceptor is a third-person vehicular car combat game, released only for the 3DO. An alternate version of the game was later released for the Sega Saturn and PlayStation consoles, named Off-World Interceptor Extreme. The two versions of the game have identical core gameplay elements, though the Extreme version is tweaked to feel more like the arcade mode in the original Off-World Interceptor. The game was developed under the title "Orion Off-Road".[3]

Look. Was it a great game? No. But as a 10 year old playing this game, the MST3K videos between levels were hilarious. I never got super far though.

During the early days of the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn, a group of bad games came along that simply did not show off the power of these new consoles. In fact, they didn't look far off from Genesis game quality. Off-World Interceptor Extreme, minus the absolutely horror-like full-motion video, looks like an 8-bit game. However, graphics don't always make the game, that's not the problem, the trouble here, is that this game would be bad no matter what console it was out for.

Gameplay 0/10
Other games that have a "Moon Physics" cheat code have it for a reason, there's less gravity on the moon, meaning if you jumped, you would spend more time in the air, but you wouldn't know it by playing this game. You see, this is no ordinary moon, this is a moon where you can go flying off a cliff at top speed only to cling to the mountain and get exactly zero air time anyways, all the while avoiding the pillars that magically appear and shoot at you. While you're doing this, and trying to beat your "opponents," you'll want to collect wrenches and other popups that appear in the area as they allow you to buy powerups and missiles and stuff. This is worthless of course, because the powerups hardly make an effect, and the missiles hardly do any purposeful damage to your "opponents." (I keep quoting the word "opponents." Check out the "Fun" section to see why.) The rest of the game is comprised of holding down the X button and occasionally moving your truck around when moon rocks are coming at you, I mean...when you're heading towards moon rocks, oh wait...I had it right the first time. I found it a little hard to get around some of the bigger ones, I could however just ram them at full-speed and then simply drive around them. I also enjoyed jumping over cliffs and not having my wheels leave the ground. It's funny that full-motion video was the big thing back then, getting real-life actors to play characters in games, it just looks completely messed up, unless you're gonna make an all-video game like Night Trap or Double Switch. Zero points given for gameplay due to the fact that there's nothing really to accomplish here, you drive straight towards a checkpoint, yay! I just completely covered gameplay, let's move to the fun-factor.

Crystal Dynamics decided to abandon all of this information when they created this game. It has some of the absolute worst artificial intelligence I have ever seen in in a game to date. Your opponents are a bit like carbon copies of yourself, they move at the exact same speed as you no matter what, at full speed, and when letting off the gas a bit. If you come to a complete stop, so will they, if you jam back and forth on the gas and brake, so will they. This is their way of messing with you. Another programming gem is how they drive, they will simple swerve left and right in front or you in various S-shapes, while driving over each other clumsily and horrible looking. But hey, if that isn't fun, I don't know what the heck "fun" could possible be.

Fire and Brimstone factor 7/10
This game is pure hell. It's not good/playable/healthy, etc. If you like games with eccentric full-motion video studs, then by all means get this game, It'll knock your socks. The hilarious thing, is that there are people that got dressed up and learned lines for this game. Somewhere....there's an actor who's only work has been Off-World Interceptor Extreme.
