OpenMW is a free, open source, and modern engine which re-implements and extends the 2002 Gamebryo engine for the open-world role-playing game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Like the Construction Set for the original Morrowind engine, OpenMW comes with its own editor, called OpenMW-CS, which allows the user to edit or create their own mods or original games. Both OpenMW and OpenMW-CS are written from scratch, and aren’t made to support any third party programs that have been added to the original Morrowind engine to improve its functionality. OpenMW is not a “mod” to Morrowind. It is an entirely different game engine that does not use the original Morrowind.exe in any way.

Gets better and better with every subsequent release. The only problem is that I will probably die before it's finished or the next version is launched.
Fun fact: people are already trying to adapt the Fallout games to this engine, oblivion and skyrim too.

straferunning is too great of a sacrifice for... what tangible benefit, exactly?

Fixes a lot of the engine-related issues of the original Morrowind, and also allows for multiplayer fuckery thanks to the TES3MP mod. There's nothing like arriving in Gnisis by silt strider only to realize that the silt strider guy there is dead because every NPC in the overworld is loaded in if even one player is outside, meaning that they wander around and mostly die of fall damage or fall into bodies of water before you even find them.

Speaking of best RPGs ever... this one is probably not. However, I do think it's excellent, but I know it's not for everone. Running it with mods on the engine remake works flawlessly and made for a really enjoyable revisit.
