Note: This review was written in June of 2014 when the game was more active and just released.

So here I am playing another Gameloft game. Anyone who has followed this site for a while knows I can’t stand Gameloft. They usually just completely rip off franchises like Halo, GTA, Max Payne, World of Warcraft, or many others. I only played Rival Knights mainly for the graphics. It looked fantastic and figured free can’t really hurt. Sure enough, I realized this is the best game Gameloft has made. Jousting has never been this fun before (or so I thought).

The game is all about quick matches that last about 10 seconds a piece. You start out at one end of a railing and charge your way toward your opponent on a horse. You gain speed by tapping the screen when an arrow passes a green square. Hit the squares around it and you just get a good boost instead of perfect. Once you approach your opponent you must swipe towards the orange dot and get as close as possible. The winner is the one who outranks on speed, armor, and strength (you need to outmatch in at least 2 of those three or get a critical hit). A critical hit is when the dot matches up perfectly and turns green.

The matches are addictive and fun and one of the best parts is watching your opponent fly off his horse with hilarious ragdoll physics. The goal is to upgrade your lance, horse, helmet, and armor to out beat opponents online. This in form of two tournaments. The Echelon tournament which is a small ladder where you must perform your absolute best. That ghost is saved and your rival will answer back and try to beat it. This tournament is to win gems which you would normally have to buy with real-world cash. The second tournament is a climb of the leaderboard by winning bugles. At the end of the tournament, you can win gold, gems, or even rare equipment. It’s a complete blast and you can even have up to 3 teammates help you earn bugles. With every teammate who wins a round, you get one bugle and vice versa.

However, these rounds cost emblems. You get a total of 6 red royal emblems, which are used for single player, and 6 blue social emblems, which are used for tournaments. These regenerate pretty fast (a mere minute) or you can ask friends to send you emblems. I have to say that this is a free to play game done right. You can play the game, earn gold, and max out your armor without spending a dime and you can do it at a normal pace. Upgrading your armor costs time but it’s usually seconds or a few minutes. This isn’t Clash of Clans where you have to wait days for some things to upgrade.

With that said the graphics are fantastic. Some of the best seen in mobile games. High-resolution textures, fantastic lighting effects, and amazing physics. I just wish there was more. Maybe more backgrounds, more modes, and more content. Hopefully, with future updates, this will be answered, but what’s here is an addictive game that won’t disappoint.
