Spider: The Video Game

released on Feb 26, 1997

In Spider: The Video Game you control a spider that has been implanted with a neural transmitter port, cybernetic legs, and weapon accessories. You begin at a sector map which functions as a blueprint of the research laboratory which you must explore. In order to clear a level, you must collect a required number of microchips. You must also find exits in each area in order to advance to the next level. The spider is always equipped with a Slasher leg and webbing, and he is capable of enhancing his fighting ability with weapons by collecting power-ups. The weapons include homing missiles, flame throwers, boomerangs, and electro-beams. You'll need these munitions to defend yourself against other spiders, cyber-rats, toxic green frogs, and other laboratory pests in this 3-D side-scrolling platform contest.

The thing about this game is that everyone likes it for the concept and not the execution. "YOU'RE A SPIDER WITH A FLAMETHROWER, WAOW!!! HIDDEN GEM OF THE YEAR???"

It's a video game. They didn't train a real spider to do this stuff man. And the actual game is just okay.

This game really makes it feel like you're a spider fighting cyborg wasps

This was a game that I really enjoyed, despite my arachnophobia!

You play as a spider who recently had the brain patterns of it's creator put upon you moments before he was shot down and carried away my a company who want to steal his technology. The headset his fused to his head so you need to save him before they cut off his head, killing him!

You have to travel through all kinds of dangerous areas to chase the kidnappers and fight against the huge number of other cyberised pests that keep leaking out of the box that was damaged in the attack.

In this platformer, you can jump, walk on walls and use your web to descend, but the most fun are the upgrades such as changing your blade-leg for a boomerang, flame thrower, electric zapper, gas speakers, mines and other fun upgrades that colour the spider, making them covered in metal.

Edit:
Better stream

A cool idea: you play as a spider that replaces multiple limbs with guns. Side-scrolling your way through other insects that also have weapon appendages. Trouble is, the premise isn't backed by good gameplay. It's very hard to remember anything from this title as the narrative didn't stick with me. The combat was flimsy and overall ruined what could have been an interesting experience. Maybe it was ahead of its time but ultimately wastes its potential.

Tbh, if you just started out each level with infinite flamethrower, this might unironically be good.

I didn't play much of this game but it so ingrained in my brain that it is the first thing I think of when I see a spider.
