Star Parodier

released on Apr 24, 1992

Star Parodier is a vertical scrolling shooter, much like the Star Soldier games, and features many of the same conventions, such as collecting power-ups to upgrade the player's weapons, and facing several bosses and minibosses as they progress through the game. The game also features the 2 and 5 minute high score time attack modes seen in previous games. However, in parodying the hard sci-fi atmosphere of the Star Soldier games, Star Parodier takes a light hearted approach by featuring cute, cartoonish graphics and toning down the violence (for example, defeated enemies wave white flags in surrender). The players choose from one of three craft to play as in the game: the Paro Ceaser from Star Soldier, a giant flying Bomberman or an anthropomorphic PC Engine console that shoots HuCards and CD-ROMs at enemies. The game was originally only released in Japan, though it was also intended to be released in North America under the name Fantasy Star Soldier.

Star Parodier is a solid shmup with pleasing cartoony visuals. It is considered to be a good beginner shmup. You can play as bomberman here too if you're a fan of him, which also includes your fair share of bomberman fanservice in the levels too. It's an enjoyable run but nothing too spectacular. Start here if you're looking to get into shmups.

What an incredibly charming shmup. Actually a really great intro shooter for those (such as I) who are not that great at them, it also is very straightforward and doesn't have a ton as far as unique or defining systems - you're absolutely playing this for the Hudson Soft and PC Engine references and charm.

I don't regreat doing it with Bomberman, but playing at him made it a bit tougher versus PC-Engine-Kun(?)'s homing powerups. Either way, a blast to play!

Felt like a good place to start as the first game I actively go for a 1CC of. Pretty dummy easy early on with that sudden difficulty spike near the end that forces you to actually start thinking, perfect for a beginner like me!!!! Plus, the sprite work is phenomenal and the OST is bumping, and you can be Bomberman with his lil bomber oomfies. Every game should let you have your lil bomber oomfies in it.

High-spirited and energetic. This flavor of 'parody shmup' resonates more with me than Parodius and its over-exaggerated snot-nose antics. And you get to play as Bomberman!!!!!

As a shmup it could be a lot better, it's embarrassingly easy until they randomly decide to ramp up the difficulty. And FUCK those Star Soldier checkpoints - why do I respawn on death sometimes and don't in other places? Imbecile behavior.

edit - C_F Has Informed Me Checkpoints Are A Powerup

Short fun bullet hell the last stage is really hard so GL :)
