Star Wars: Battlefront is the first in the Star Wars: Battlefront series and is a third/first-person shooter video game based around battles featured in the Star Wars movies. It was developed by Pandemic Studios and LucasArts, and released on September 20, 2004 for Xbox (playable on Xbox 360), PlayStation 2, and PC, the same day as the release of the Star Wars Trilogy (DVD) set. Players can either play Star Wars: Battlefront online, or offline with up to 4 players (on consoles).

A solid time, although it is rather janky. The multiplayer is the best part of the game for sure.

The year is 3248. Civilisation lies in ruins. The human race is near extinction. I'M STILL SHOOTING THIS DROIDEKA HOW MANY BULLETS DO THEY TAKE FUCKING DIE. AND THAT'S IF I CAN REACH THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE, YOUR MOVEMENT SPEED IN THIS GAME IS COMPARABLE TO ME CIRCA 1998, AKA A TITTY SUCKING 1 YEAR OLD.

The game's awesome, the sprawling landscapes, intricate corridor networks and vehicle variety make the scope feel HUGE and, when you finally do find an enemy after five minutes, you find ALL the enemies, leading to frantic, adrenaline fuelled clusterfucks where the fast time to kill assures high pressure standoffs and a feeling of flow state as your momentum hurls you from enemy to enemy.

The jank elements get fixed in the sequel, meaning there's not really much reason to play this nowadays as it's literally just this game but better, but on its own merits it's fucking fire.

A fun Star Wars game. Growing up I played the second one more but this was a decent warm up. Solid maps and playing as Stormtroopers just blasting enemies away will never not be satisfying.

A shame you can't play as any heroes and the camera is a bit too up close even in third person for my liking plus the fact you can't sprint is dumb.

A Lord of the Rings game done in the style of Battlefront would be awesome.

This era of Star Wars games will always have a special place in my heart though.

Star Wars: Battlefront II is one of my favorite games of all-time. I played it endlessly as a kid, and even when I got the first Battlefront second-hand later, despite having already played hundreds of hours of the second, I really didn't spend nearly as much time with the original. In the years since, I've continued to revisit Battlefront II across PC and Xbox Series X, barely returning to this first game. Having now replayed the campaigns and messed around in both Galactic Conquest and Instant Action, playing this game deliberately for the first time since I was probably nine or ten, I now realize why.

Everything that I love about Battlefront generally is here, but everything feels clumsier. The guns feel less precise, the movement feels stilted (why would I ever bother going prone), and the units are unbalanced. The Droidekas make playing as the Clones on any non-vehicle map an exercise in frustration, and the inability to do double-zoom a sniper scope as that faction is frustrating too.

There's no doubt that Battlefront simply has a different pace than its sequel - no sprint, no forwards roll, no changing classes at control points, etc. And to that end, these mechanical differences do lend a certain feel to this game than II, but it's not one I prefer. The balance just doesn't feel right to me, and the more arcade-like sensibilities of II are what put it in my top-tier.

I'm hammering in on my complaints largely just to try and articulate why there's a star-and-a-half difference between my score here and my score of the second game, which launched a year later and repurposes these bones entirely.

After all, I'd still rather play Battlefront I than most games that exist; the map selection here is great, certain units like the Dark Trooper are among the most fun in series history, the intrinsic excitement of a conquest match is pretty phenomenal. There's a reason that these games are lauded as being among the very best Star Wars games.

And yes, I am playing via the collection (on Switch). If, like me, you're just trying to play offline it's largely flawless.

Well they fumbled something as simple as a re-release of 20 year old games so here I am playing the original Xbox version and killing bots.
I think this is the first game I have memory of playing, so a lot of my love is undeniably carried by nostalgia but it was still a blast to open this up and spend some 10 hours in it. To remember that I once thought this was the peak of graphics!
It still blows my mind how well the game just works offline because of the use of bots. Simulated multiplayer matches against AI. While not matching other players, it is fun and can even be challenging, especially on higher difficulties. The maps are the highlights, I would say. Especially the ones that are exclusive to this one and did not make it over to 2, like Bespin Platforms or Tatooine.
Some issues did really bug me this time around, though. The different factions do have strengths and weaknesses, but the balance is off. The CIS have droidekas with strong shields and the mobility of the AT-STs of the Empire was more often an issue than it was a benefit. In addition, clones and stormtroopers are always more fucked on the forest maps of Yavin and Endor, since the droids and the rebels blend in more with the environment and you stick out with white armor. I'm confident those issues were somewhat resolved in the sequel, but I will see that once I move on to it.

But yeah, one of the first games I ever played, and it's still dear to my heart.
