Don't think it's better than the original but it's still an amazing game, 8.5/10.

it's like, a very competent game and plays very well but also it just... sort of keeps dragging on.... and on... ended up feeling burnt out and shelving it for now.

There are few games out there with a reputation quite as strong as Half-Life, and as a result, it was one of the few games that, until I had recently started playing this remake, I actively avoided anything that could possibly be perceived as a spoiler. I knew that the player character's name was Gordon Freeman. I knew the game was an FPS that featured 3D platforming. I knew the game had a sequel that left the story unfinished, and I knew that a gravity gun was involved somewhere in the series. That's it. That's all I knew going in. From what I've read online this game does an excellent job of remaining faithful to the original, so I will be moving forward from here assuming as much. Having now finished the game I can see why the original made such a big splash in the pre-halo landscape. That said, my own time here was decidedly mixed to put it mildly. The gunplay bothered me the whole time. The built-in aiming mechanic was basically useless and hip-firing was a gamble even at the best of times, which wouldn't have been so bad if the levels weren't so ridiculously long. I used to think Halo's the Ark or the Covenant were long, but those are nothing compared to some of the levels here. And then, of course, it wouldn't be a PC gaming experience with the thing that really dragged out the whole process of playing the game: performance issues. The game crashed on me constantly in every chapter. Usually it would just close the game window and boot me to the desktop, but there were a couple of times it locked up my entire computer to the point that I had to manually shut it down. One such instance occurred at the tail end of chapter 17. Only this time, I got a bonus surprise. All the saves I'd had stored for safety purposes for the last 4 chapters were gone except for the two most recent ones, which were corrupted and unusable. I did my best to play fair, but when the game goes and deletes my saves I have no issue using console commands to get back to where I was before, which is what I did in this case. I can honestly say that without that I would've dropped the game. It's mildly interesting to a point. I like the ideas behind its level design and the story is at least somewhat interesting. I still plan on continuing on with the series as a whole, but I seriously doubt I'll be returning to this entry.

A love letter to the original game. The graphics are stunning and the level design faithful. There were some changes to the main progression, like a large ommission of On A Rail, but honestly that is for the better.
A must play.

Played for around 100 mins and was just crawling through vents and shooting little rat dog enemies for about an hour straight. I just gave up and stopped playing, felt really repetitive and boring. Maybe the rest of the game is good but I can't bring myself to continue it.

Effectively a must-play for Half-Life fans, especially if you've already played the first game because seeing how much life was put into this game is genuinely mesmerizing.

Do not that this game (on default difficulty) is significantly more difficult than Half-Life 1 and arguably Half-Life 2 (due to the abscence of the gravity gun) in its middle-part.

this happened to my buddy eric once

I LOVE DRAGGING PIZZA AND A PURPLE HAT WITH ME THROUGH THE ENTIRE GAME!!!

A very solid remake of Half-Life, but I wish Interloper wouldn't drag on for so long and that Xen didn't have so many cable/plug puzzles as they get repetitive real fast

Top tier OST and visuals tho and Xen does look more gorgeous than it's ever been

There is also a fan project for this game, dedicated to remake the Blue Shift expansion as a mod

No, this isn't exactly like the original half life. But goddamn it's such a fantastic remaster, I felt so enamored by the story and environment.

really good linier story if you like that but the game also feels free like you arent forced to go anywhere combat was fun too and movement feels amazing just lacking a bit in the dialogue and general story explanation but it makes up for it and is in a way expected

Black Mesa is a fresh coat of paint, revamping the beloved first Half-Life game.

i cant express how happy this game makes me. it doesnt replace the original half life and it delivers such a fun experience while pushing the source engine to its limits.

Half-Life must've been mind-blowing back when it initially released, like an actual leap in storytelling and gameplay. Because this remake feels brand-new, and more alive than a lot of FPS games today...

It's Black Mesa, what did you expect. The entire game was honeslty a blast, with amazing combat and a lot of fun to be had. I did think I was tired of the XEN NIGHTMARE TOWER by the end though, and had just about all the fun I could have with it for now. I might come back achievement hunting, but until then.

Extremely fun! Massive upgrade from the original Half Life that you can appreciate and love with or without playing the original.

melhor remake da historia???

Such a great remake of the original. Reworks many sections and outdated parts of the original (Not saying the original is bad, just kinda annoying at some points) and streamlines it more in line with the game design of Half-Life 2. Some of the achievements are kinda annoying to get (looking at you purple hat) but other than those hiccups it plays very well and defines itself as a wonderful fanmade remake.

An impressively constructeed remake that contains all the delights the Source engine brings, yet with its new additions still leaves parts to be desired. The puzzles stand out as some of the most engaging I've experienced in a title like this and the game honestly looks superb for a Source engine game. Soundtrack also goes crazy, seriously makes a lot of otherwise "whatever" moments feel more impactful.

I'd say the first half of the game within Black Mesa is the strongest part of the game, as well as the intro of Xen, but as the game goes deeper in it begins to crack with monotony lining each of the levels, especially in the new Xen. While the puzzles are still quality, they become repetitive in structure and goal and by the end it feels kind of mindless.

It's a cool game but doesn't have all the extra oomph that Half Life 2 has with its story and gameplay, even as the remake aims to push a similar envelope in what the Source engine can do. It's still a decent game but not one that maximised its potential in creating Xen a much more unique world that separates itself from the somewhat mundane reality of Earth and its technologies.

incredible remake of an incredible game

Not as strong as the original, but damn does it get close.

Decided to play through it again and get the little purple hat achievement, great time all around. It wasn't much of a challenge I guess, more just a minor annoyance to keep track of. Source is just godlike to me man, shooting a headcrab with a shotgun or blowing up a barnacle with a satchel never gets boring. To list a couple nitpicks though, the game crashed a couple of times (especially in Interloper) which wasn't a big deal since I was quicksaving a ton for the challenge, but having to let it load all the way back up was annoying. Sometimes the plugs in Xen would just not plug into the sockets too, effectively softlocking me. Most annoying of all, I'm not sure why they added the pizza achievement (which is just a rehash of the Hat achievement) that makes you carry a prop through all the most annoying sections of the game again. It's a fun little secret ending, but I think the pizza should've been hidden somewhere a lot closer to the Nihilanth. Those all aren't really big deals though! The level design improves upon Half Life's strong foundation really well and Xen is much, much improved over the original. What was an unfortunate ending to a great game is now just... the great ending to a great game. I still love both, hell, I'm playing through Sven Co-op with some friends right now, but I'd probably pop in Black Mesa on any given day
