After playing through Epic Mickey Power of Illusion on 3DS, I was curious to see what inspired it. I remember going onto the family computer when I was a kid and playing a rom of this on some retro gaming website, so the first level is ingrained into my head.

Castle of Illusion is a simple little Mickey platformer but unfortunately nothing for me to write home about. I think it's just okay by Genesis platformer standards, and full of color and life in each level. Gameplay overall is pretty slow, but it's a consistent slowness that makes it easier to plan jumps and such.

I beat this entire game in roughly 2 hours, and I found it to be pretty unforgiving at points. No shame, I abused the CRAP out of the Save States on this one. Can't imagine what it would be like if I had to start over

Not really in a rush to see what World of Illusion is about yet but I think it's great to have some Mickey Mouse games with some level of quality.

Classic platformer, showing off what the Genesis did so well. I wish these would make a comeback (although Illusion Island was a fun recent successor)

This is a classic platformer that I had always wanted to play, but never had the chance until I got the Genesis Mini. I knew it had great animation and fun controls, and it did. While not long, every level has quite a few secrets to discover and unique gameplay and obstacles to tackle; it's fairly bursting with great ideas all the way through. The game feels joyful to play from the start, and keeps that all the way through.

It's an interesting snapshot of the lifespan of the Genesis. This seems like one of the earliest titles to really start to show the promise of the system, in a way a prelude of the incredible action games that came in the next few years. As is, Castle of Illusion is a solid hop and bop platformer with beautiful animation and music, coming right before the true greats hit the system.

Played on Genesis Mini.

Very visually appealing, simple and effective 2d platformer. While fairly short, there is a reasonable amount of challenge and a fairly even quality, which can make it fun to replay.

Amazing platformer, one of the best Disney on 16bits.
That being said, WHO TF PASSED THE GHOST HOUSE while being a kid ??

The Genesis version still has that great Master System energy but with the clockwork-flat 16-bit design that I love more than the painterly World of Illusion. The weight of the jump and bounce attack is really satisfying, and the level design is smart and varied.

You could already tell from my ranking that I did not enjoy this game, but to give this game credit, it does have a visual appeal being a dark and twisted castle that leads to different colorful worlds with an enchanted forest, a toyland, storming lands, candy land, library, and the castle itself. It's well varied in its environment that gives you the sense that this is a kid's game.

For a kid's game, however, oh my god this game is hard! Maybe it's my fault for playing the hardest difficulty for some reason, so I won't criticize the game too harshly for this reason, but I feel if even if I set it on Normal, there are still other annoyances that I need to deal with.

My biggest gripe with the game is that just feels slow in its movement. This feels odd to me because I did play the 2013 remake years ago, and I didn't remember it feeling so tedious. I did play it a day later to find that the game had slightly improved movement speed. You also don't need to remember to press the A button again to damage foes while in the air and the jumping actually felt like it propelled you forward, something I did not get from this game.

Some of the game's obstacles were also a bit much. Some of the enemy placement was god awful, and I still haven't forgotten about that one bat in The Storm that spawned out of nowhere to hit you, or that undodgeable bat wave with the other option that I have to be killed with the flood, or bats that were so cluttered that it took actual trial and error... did I mention I absolutely hate the bats? What about that one falling block trap in The Castle that requires trial and error to know how to avoid because there is no indicator which one will fall and which one doesn't?

I wasn't really expecting much, but I still felt kinda let down. The remake just blows it out of the water even if it ends up being significantly easier.

In terms of presentation, I like my 2D platformer to have color, contrast, nice animations, catchy tunes, and not-annoying SFX, and Castle of Illusion checks all those boxes. The stages always vary in visual design and gameplay, which shows that they're really trying to be creative even within such a restricted scope.

It's one of those precise platformers that require your attention all the time; otherwise, you're going to spend lives/continues that aren't easily refilled until you finish the game. When done right, these are among my favorites, so I enjoyed the game very much.

The only downside is the bosses; they're definitely a product of that era: you watch the long attack pattern the first time, taking some damage, and avoid all the other times because there's almost no variation. The songs composed by Tokuhiko Uwabo and Shigenori Kamiya deserve a special mention because I've been singing the Library and Dark Castle melodies for a few days.

It's worth mentioning that, even if sparse, the interactions between Mickey and Minnie are pretty cute and deserving for the ending of this good game.

Incredibly easy, but pretty superlative platformer with some quality sound and visuals. Simple and child-friendly, no real challenge but a well-made and jaunty Disney romp. Quite short with a couple of secret spots, but not much else.

bem legal zerei ele faz uns anos

A very short, sweet game. Perfect example of the classic Disney games of yesteryear. Wonder if the remake is as good as this one...

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would! A fun platformer with creative levels and a great soundtrack that doesn’t outstay its welcome.

A decent platformer with a good variety of stages, culminating in around 30 to 40 minutes of content. It's worth taking a look at once if you're bored, although it doesn't do anything special or groundbreaking. What it does do though, is done well enough.

I have a childhood memory of it, even though I wasn't born around the time of release... the game is really cute and fun, despite being quite slow.
