Bought a Japanese cart in Amsterdam. Played on Analogue Pocket.

This was a pretty good port of DKC 1 from the SNES. Of course graphics and sound are going to be crappier, but it was still super easy to get into. There were times I thought there was a secret room but just died from attempting to go in there. The voice samples for Donkey and Diddy were updated and they're pretty hilarious. One of the nice things about the GBA game is that you can save on the world at any time without Candy, and there are extra modes to play.

Even kid me had good taste. On that one underwater level with the swordfish, I would straight up leave my GBA on a surface, facing upwards and just have it play that blessed music. Although it was boofed through the speakers, that ambience was smacking.

Oh and I liked purposely loosing Diddy just to get him in a barrel later in the level. Idk why I was just challenging myself like that when I was younger, but who knows. Never was able to commit to getting all the letterings too.

This game was very fun, but later levels became very tedious. The GBA port of this game looks surprisingly good, and is a very nice art style. If you want to play, and aren't a platforming game lover it will take a little bit of patience, but it is worth it.

virtual console injects are a wild thing. also holy hell this version is crusty

I've always had fond memories of DKC but I've never beaten it before. After picking up a GBA copy, I finally finished it and I can say that I personally enjoy this way more than any Mario Platformer. Just love the aesthetics, the audio and the way the game feels to play honestly.

Good SNES port. I found it a little repetitive and a bit hard at the end, but it's a very fun game. I would say that the biggest flaws are the lack of different enemies/scenarios and good boss fights. That's all.

Yep, it's Donkey Kong Country but with more stuff.
Fun platforming, great music, charming character designs, not much I feel I can say.

Apparently this port is meh. Kid me didn't know that.

Surprisingly it's a very good version of Donkey Kong Country, I admire how Rare preferred to sacrifice graphics in order to keep the gameplay at its best level, since the field of view was not reduced, instead all the sprites were shrunk, which makes the image quality poor compared to the original SNES version, but instead, this Game Boy Advance version doesn't have the problems that other SNES ports do have by reducing the field of view, such as causing you can't see where you're going to fall or you can't see enemies outside the screen.

It's been very gratifying to play this version to be honest, the character controller has been altered a bit, making the characters feel a bit more nimble and light. This depends on taste, but personally, I think I prefer the way this version plays over the original. There are also a couple of other improvements, such as the fact that each boss has a tiny tweak or two that makes them a bit more interesting. Some barrels leading to the bonus rooms are now easier to see, which makes this part of the game feel more natural in a way. There is also the addition of a new collectible which is photos, which adds more replay value, but I don't quite like it, as there are a lot of photos that you get by doing very specific actions, rather than being hidden in the normal way in the levels.

There are also some quality of life improvements, such as the fact that you can save your game at any time (which makes the life counter no longer matter), and 2 mini-games and a Crash Bandicoot-like time trial mode were added, which I thought was a great addition. One thing that makes this version feel odd, though, is that there are certain new sprites that don't match the originals, making the game look weird at times.

Conclusion
I don't consider myself the biggest fan of DKC, but they are games that I have a lot of respect for because of how influential they were and the excellent atmosphere they have thanks to their mind-blowing soundtrack and revolutionary graphics for the time. Having said that... as this is a version with a paled color palette, compressed audio and graphics, it obviously loses a bit of what makes the original SNES Donkey Kong Country so special. However, don't get me wrong, this is a great platformer, it has an interesting level design that makes each level feel different from the others and is challenging without being really unfair, making DKC a game with variety, and more importantly, makes this a version worth playing despite the poorer audio and visual quality.

If you are a big fan of the first Donkey Kong Country, I highly recommend trying this version.

I had this and DKC2 on GBA as a kid, never beat either but I remember having fun with them with being my earliest exposure to Donkey Kong. I'm an adult now, and I'm happy to say the GBA remake of DKC1 still holds up very well today.

I'd arguably say I'd put it slightly above the original just for the improvements to the control, DK's speed being increased, and the tweaks to the bosses to make them a bit more challenging. Despite those positives I do like both versions about the same anyhow. The GBA renditions of the OST were nice to hear too.

My main gripe (and it does affect the original too) is the verticality of the camera being a bit jank sometimes with not seeing whats above or below you.

Overall, still absolutely worth playing!

Recomendo!

A very fun, challenging (but not unfair) platformer. The fact it's DK and a lot of characters are based on animals of the jungle gives it its own identity.

Pros: I don't know if I'm glad this exists or not, while yes, it was cool to have Donkey Kong Country on the GBA, we had just gotten a nifty demake only a couple years prior on the GBC, which added a lot of new features like hidden green bananas, a photo album, and minigames like Funky's Fishing. This version also has a lot of those same features, same Funky Fishing minigame even, some new ones too, like Candy's Dance Studio (which is a thing that isn't terrible but isn't exactly good either) but this version of DKC is on a system that's more SNES capable, and this GBA version does play more like the SNES original... And that's good! But...

Cons: It looks like ass. The sprites look ripped from Spriter's-Resource, but resized, smudged and occasionally improperly cropped. The palette is the worst offender, in an attempt to be more visible on the non-backlit GBA, everything looks washed out and discolored, Kritters now appear bright purple for instance instead of green, and backgrounds are just... gross. Gone are the lighting effects of SNES, the sound chip for GBA, god bless it, is just not right for DKC, the music and sounds are worse in every way... They try to make up for it with added elements like a story intro cutscene, as well as an ending cutscene that totally ruins the moment (though Cranky showin up after every boss is pretty funny I admit) They also added tiny frogs and spiders or clownfish roamin' around the stages to give them more life, but ehh... They kinda feel unnatural all said and done. And yeah, I'll say it, it's worse than the GBC version, despite this GBA version playing more like the SNES game, the GBC version at least had the charm of being an 8-bit demake, and the extra features in there felt novel.

What it means to me: Look, Donkey Kong Country is pretty much my favorite game of all time, I'm not not going to be excited any time they give me another way to play it. And here, it was actually pretty remarkable given the fact that Rare had just been sold to Microsoft, and I thought we'd never get another Donkey Kong game from them again! So, the fact that they got to make this, I felt pretty lucky. Unfortunately, it was the portable team at Rare that made this, and their output is nowhere near as quality as the home console department... Eh, take what you can get I guess.

Donkey Kong but washed out and funny sounding

It is a worse version of the SNES original... Which still makes it a good game but no reason to play this over the original. It has a more forgiving save system which I personally don't prefer to the original but I'm sure most people will see it as an improvement.

[GBA Version] Back in my school days when I was making bad grades and got grounded from all video games, all I had was a hacked PSP that I bought with my own money. And sneak playing emulator games on it was all I could do. For some reason the SNES emulator on PSP could not handle Donkey Kong Country, so the GBA version allowed me to finally play all the way through this classic for the first time. It has changes from the original version, but I was none the wiser at the time. And as long as it kept me occupied through that time, it was doing it's job. So for me this will always be a special game.

That's right. I still played games even though I had C's and D's on my report card. Fucking try and stop me from playing video games. You can't. "You're grounded from all games!" she said and took all the game consoles out of my room, yeah, guess what, I could hide a PSP in my bookbag. Nice try, Mom!

é... donkey kong country

só que com gráficos piores
e musica pior
e sei la o unico motivo de eu ter jogado isso é que eu gosto muito de donkey kong 🥲

It's a surprisingly good port of the original DKC. I played through the trilogy on GBA before I played them on SNES and it's honestly not the worst way to experience theses games.

The SNES version is still better, and it's a little weird going back to the GBA ports now since the physics are just different enough that it takes a second to get used to it.

Arguably the definitive version of DKC.

Very excellent port of the SNES classic, and the first franchise I really got into as a young gamer (I genuinely hadn't even heard of Mario yet when I was playing through these games). The graphics were excellent, the levels varied and packed with secrets, and the difficulty just right. Great minigames too with the fishing and rhythm dance studio. The repeating bosses were one minor weak point in an otherwise excellent package.
