Played it in 2021 and it still holds up. These games are just timeless and will always play great. Really hard at times, but would recommend to anyone that likes the genre!

best way to play the original Metroid story imo

the mother brain fight nearly ended me but the final escape mission brought me back to life through sheer adrenaline

getting the fully upgraded suit and blasting through the ship has to be one of the most satisfying moments in gaming I've had recently

Fantastic reworking of an originally not so fantastic game. Breathes so much life into the original Metroid.

just like super metroid, need to replay it to appreciate it better

The definitive way to play the original Metroid.

this went by really fast. its a complete breeze, yeah its a little linear and some bombable tiles blend in with the rest of them, but it's okay. Combat was snappy and cool, the animations are also really awesome (U can hold onto the ledge and aim and shoot. Tell me that isnt the most badass thing ever!! :D) The movement options are pretty fun but i never really got a hold of them lol. I also think this is the first instance of a stealth part of a non stealth game that i actually really enjoyed. Also wanted to give a shoutout to the metroids for being insane in this game. In metroid prime they're not much other than a nuisance but in this they're genuinely terrifying and intense when you fight them. More than one? omg. And then there was one part where i messed up and I had 5 on me at the same time? and I CAME OUT ALIVE!! WOOHOO!! it felt like doom eternal down there man. Yea, fun game and i am prob gonna play am2r next. cus the other options are either old or i have to go to a store and buy a 3ds game... yuck

Metroid Zero Mission makes the original Metroid playable! This game is great, exploring the caverns of Zebes and collecting the many upgrades and items is thrilling. This game made me realize how good Metroid games are, and it got me hooked on the rest of the series!

Zero Mission is a well-made remake of the first NES Metroid game. Aside from the much-improved graphics (similar to the SNES Super Metroid), this new version includes welcome quality-of-life improvements over the original, such as a map and much more responsive controls, which are welcome additions. And, for the purists, once you beat the game, you'll discover that the original NES Metroid can be played from the options menu. This game is a great addition to the Metroid franchise.

This game fucks.
Pretty intuitive for exploration except for one part.
The chozo statues telling you where to go helps a ton for my linearity and easy to get lost brain, while not detracting from the exploration sense, adding power ups like the speed boost to it and making it fit so well with the level design is awesome.
While bosses are a thing that shall not be mentioned, the rest of it is so good, and the OST also is very good.
Slightly prefer Fusion, but omg, this game's so awesome.

No your first mission isn't your "zero mission", idiot, it is the 1st mission. That's how counting works

I got recommended to play Super before Zero Mission, which I would suggest against. ZM it's pretty much on par, but more accessible, less clunky, and shorter. And in terms of gameplay, I think it's just as fun, even though easier. But what I'm missing is the unique atmosphere of Super and the little moments that added to the story and overall impact of the game (like Crocomire and a certain cute interaction at the end). So overall, I don't have much to say about ZM. It's a decent Metroid, but not as memorable for me.

Much of the original game's intent is lost in translation, and the addition of a map and objective markers betrays a large part of what makes the NES game so compelling, but Zero Mission is an interesting design exercise if nothing else.

While it strikes a better balance between open exploration and handholding than its disappointingly patronizing predecessor Metroid Fusion, the edges have been sanded down to a fault. The easy breezy linear design offers practically no resistance; this game is the polar opposite of the brutally unforgiving NES original. However, there's no denying how meticulously designed and polished the game is on its own merits.

Zero Mission is a very good modernized Metroid experience, but the idea it's the definitive version of the first game is an insane notion.

Zero Mission is as close to a perfect Metroid game as I've ever played. The only couple of faults I can find with it are a couple unintuitively designed areas and that the final area and tedious mess of a final boss are disappointing. Other than that, Samus handles incredibly well, and the Metroid gameplay formula is perfected here.

Metroid Zero Mission - The Pur-Zero Suit of Happiness
When compared to this game, the original NES Metroid looks like a failed prototype, as this here is a complete reimagining of the original narrative, that improves upon it in every single way, and goddamn is it refreshing.

Better controls, detailed visuals, improved soundtrack, quality of life enhancements, a map, a clearer story, and even some new original content to go along with the narrative. I was pleasantly surprised at the care that went into this. Just upgrading your suit piece by piece activates my little ape brain and keeps that drive to explore constantly. I also personally enjoy the puzzle-solving aspect, as some of these puzzles require a bit more critical thinking, for sure. And it's all made miles easier with the map and the fact that the game attempts to nudge players in the correct direction. This Metroid story is playable now, and it's great.

HOWEVERー it's not without its flaws. There is classical Metroid bullshit, as one may call it, scattered throughout. Sometimes it can still be a little unclear as to what to do such as when to move to another room you have to interact with a specific thing that is hidden and has basically no way indicating that it is unique. Also, the way bosses scale is sorta insane. It starts off with, albeit unique, quite easy boss fights, and then, its, “FUCK THE STUPID BRAIN, AND HER PIECE OF SHIT PET ROBOT DRAGON TOO.” Some of these boss attacks are either way too inconsistent to be able to be dodged predictably, or are spammed like crazy to where dying and doing it all over again becomes tedious rather than a neat challenge. Or, even, are unforgiving as SHIT and must be executed almost frame-perfectly.

That, or maybe I just need to get better, but even with the ability to rewind and use save states via emulation (I HAVE NO SHAME WHATSOEVER), these were some of the hardest bosses in the series, even if the game does now have opportunities to save progress constantly, and refill on essentials. So consider that if you’re a more casual player I suppose.

Either way, if you really wanna get into the Metroid series, and also don’t mind a few, ‘close up shots’ of Zero Suit fan service, this game is a great start.
SOLID 7 Super Missiles out of 10.

Not much to really say about this one. Very fun game and a classic of the genre. Short and sweet, the new stuff added on at the end are a pretty cool change of pace.

For my money, the best entry-point for any potential Metroid fan to cut their teeth on. This was the first game in the series I ever played, so going back and completing it in full this time was a fantastic full-circle moment. Compared to the original, this is a far easier game to love, with its QoL improvements and updated visual palate bringing a whole new life to the experience compared to Spartan efficacy of the first Metroid's aesthetics. Even the boss fights have been improved, and the new inclusions are mechanically fresh enough to feel like worthy adversaries.

I feel a little mixed on the new Zero Mission epilogue, but the overall impression is mostly positive. Taking a new angle to the Metroid formula with a pseudo-stealth section is a great idea on paper, and tonal switch-up that came with the new section is certainly a welcome one. I just found the encounter design to be a little wonky, almost as if the developers hadn't quite nailed the flow of some of the rooms before dropping the enemies in.

Still, this is absolutely a major jewel in Metroid's legendary crown and a sterling example in how to remake a classic game right.

With my brother constantly on my ass about playing a Metroid game I finally caved in with zero mission and I enjoyed it a lot! The graphics are great, the music is awesome and memorable and the gameplay flow feels great. The bosses are freaky, huge and fun. And the planet zebus is cool to explore. It took me a bit to complete but I've seen people beat this game in an hour which Is awesome. Definitely play this as your first Metroid game if your into retro games

Holy crap this was good! The art and music are beautiful, and I loved the cutscenes, they made me hyped for what was coming. Very fun, short and sweet metroidvania. Played the game on normal difficulty and can't say I really had any trouble until they introduced the Metroids. The whole area leading up to the "final boss" almost felt like survival horror, the way they made you rush a lot of rooms in a row without allowing you to rest. THE MOTHER BRAIN FIGHT MADE ME SCREAM

The whole endgame area was super cool, and suddenly it becomes stealth game. It wasn't even in the NES original as far as I know. I really liked the hiding mechanic and chase sequences. When you finally get your suit back, you feel so goddamn frickin' powerful. This was my first time playing a Metroid game, and I have a feeling I'm gonna love this series.

Absolutely incredible, this is my second favorite Metroid game for sure (under Dread). I remember having a few “Metroid Moments” but they don’t stick out hard enough as having been too frustrating like some of the other games have. I love the boss fights, the world design, and the postgame story. I’m not sure why but I simply really love the progression of items and exploration in this one, more than even Super Metroid. I’d honestly say this is THE Metroid game to play first, even aside from Super or Dread. The postgame story is very fun too, expanding on Samus' origins and offering some tense gameplay. THIS is how you remake and reimagine a classic game that didn’t stand the test of time as well.

Insira alguma piada de teor duvidoso sobre a samus hahahahaha entendeu ah fodase

Bom jogo aliás ❤️👍

A really great game that has stood the test of time. While it has a few hiccups(some of the bosses and a notable temporary difficulty spike during the midgame), Zero Mission is a fun and engaging game.

So glad they made a metroid 1 i can play

My introduction to the franchise was emulating this on my Vita. I never could have predicted the rabbit hole of metroidvanias playing this game would thrust me into. Zero Mission is wickedly smooth and tight. It's simply a joy to move around and shoot things.

First Metroid game I've played and I was left with a very fun experience and impression. I can definitely see myself coming back to this just for fun in the future.

Very cool they made a playable version of the first metroid game but it's just too short even for metroid standards and the epilogue kinda sucks. Great game in a vacuum but Super Metroid was already essentially a soft remake of Metroid anyways and is just the superior game.

toda vez q eu penso q esse n é bom, eu lembro do primeiro jogo

Most polished gameplay of all 2d Metroid games

It's good, the best way to start the series is with this game since it's a remake of the first Metroid, so you're not obligated to play the first one to begin with, I've already played a bit of the original, I think Samus's sprites and movements don't really match the level design of the previous game, of course the remake is much better, but I don't know, I feel strange when Samus manages to defeat a weak enemy with a strong shot, that's kind of it, the enemies are kind of meh , I think the game could have a teleporter like the Castlevania games, especially after SOTN which gave this possibility of teleporting, because I admit I couldn't bring myself to do it 100% because I was already a bit tired of wandering around the areas To get to a point I want to go to, the "post-gaming" is a bit unnecessary, but I thought the final stretch of it was cool (I won't give spoilers, play it). Other than that, it's a solid game.
