replayed this with a friend recently and mario vs luigi mode dont fuck around, one of the most intense matchs you can have fighting for your life

An extremely dull, by-the-numbers Mario game. Awful sounding synths used for the music, ugly, dull art direction. Boring, extremely easy levels. Don't play this!

I legitimately believe the original New Super Mario Bros. is one of the finest 2D mario has to offer.

You have no idea how much that spin you can do in mid-air in the later games messes with your muscle memory.

This game is nearly 20 years old, why are we still calling it new?

nothing can beat new super mario bros

People who say this game bad are the same people who hate joy and whimsy

New super Mario bros de DS é bem simples e muito divertido! Esse é um dos melhores Mario para iniciantes que querem começar conhecer mais da franquia.

Whoa! Original bosses! Sure hope they keep these as a staple of the New Super Mario Bros. series!

Replayed this game a lot as a kid and it still holds up today

Amazing overall. Great first instalment to this NSMB series. The plot is as follows, Bowser gets his son Bowser Jr to do his dirty work for him and kidnap the princess, forcing Mario to venture through different worlds to get to the final castle. Your basic Mario plot. However the gameplay is what matters, and boy does this game ever have great gameplay. I love how unique all the worlds and levels are, how the enemies like goombas and koopa troopas were brought back to life as it was a while up until the point this game was released that a new Mario bros instalment had come out, and all the new power up’s that this game introduced. The power up's that were introduced to this game was the mini mushroom, the blue turtle shell, and of course, we can’t forget about the mega mushroom. All these items brought new elements to the table that were not even considered in games like super Mario world, Mario bros 3, and the original Mario bros on the Nintendo. Sneaking through little cracks, rolling around in a turtle shell, and destroying everything on your path were ideas that weren’t even considered before. You could even play as Luigi which is was awesome! My only gripe with this game was the boss fights. The mini bosses at the end of each world felt lacklustre to say the least. Not only was it incredibly easy to beat them, but they also lacked creativity. From what I remember, most of them were just enlarged versions of enemies you commonly encountered throughout your travels. Tbh I think I just used a mega mushroom on all of them including Bowser. That’s another thing, Bowser was incredibly easy to defeat. Overall, amazing game that I have so many memories with. And an amazing introduction to a pretty good series. I’m feeling a 4 out of 5 stars.

Absolutely adored this game as a child and I do so even more now as an adult, I can’t tell you HOW MANY TIMES my sibling would delete my COMPLETED save file, and so I’d have to beat it ALL OVER AGAIN.

I also spent a lot of time in the minigames & ‘VS’ sections because of the whole dual cartridge thing.

Very very very fun game, such a fuckin shame Nintendo decided to ruin the franchise with oversaturated sequels.

A enjoyable platformer that brought Mario back to 2D

This is easily one of the peaks of the New Super Mario Bros games. New power ups, hidden paths, multiplayer battles, multiplayer mini games, unique boss fights for castles. Sure the level motif of grass, desert, water is stale but it's still such a blast to go through.

Went back through this classic to pick up all of the star coins from scratch. By far the best entry in the New Super Mario Bros series, at least in terms of level creativity, it is unmatched in that regard until Wonder, but I think people really sleep on it in that regard.

I wish there was some post-game content akin to the Wii entry. "All spent" is a pretty unsatisfying reward.

Wish they'd bring the blue shell back.

É bom, mais que isso é exagero, não tem muito o que dizer sobre o jogo, é simples, nostálgico mas não tem muita coisa que faça ele ser tão "especial"

dont remember much other than i had fun + my brother kept beating my ass in the vs mode

Jogo com um fator replay e divertimento fora do comum, muito gostosinho

The main game is pretty decent. There's more of a willingness to try out weirder ideas compared to later NSMB games. Stuff like the blue shell, secret worlds locked behind boss challenges, and level design concepts like ground deformation and swinging ? blocks and giant wiggler rides. Like Wonder, this game has a refreshing quality to it after playing NSMB Wii/2/U and 3D Land. Most of the levels are very easy though, and the core level design outside of the aforementioned gimmicks isn't as strong as 3 or World. The eight world themes here were bland even before they were reused three times. But, nonetheless, a pretty great set of levels.

The star of the show however is the multiplayer stuff, which is the best of all the main Mario games. The Mario vs. Luigi mode is excellent, with 4 really great maps to choose. Not a fan of the castle one, though, there's a lot of waiting around. You can customize this mode a bit too by setting lives or different win conditions. The minigames make a return from SM64DS. There aren't as many as before, but there are several new ones and this time they can be played with up to 4 players. The new games like Bob-omb Reverse, Danger Bob-omb Danger, and Bob-omb Trampoline are highlights.

So, overall, a pretty great 2D Mario. Get some friends together and try out the multiplayer modes.

This was one of the first games I ever owned as a kid and I never really got that far into it. I would always get stressed out about dying and I found it just way too difficult (i did play the hound out of the minigames though). Now im older and revisiting a bunch of older mario titles and it was time for me to give this game another shot.

This was the game that brought Mario back into the limelight. His first big 2d adventure in a long time and it was aptly coined "New" Super Mario Bros. For the time it was a whole new look for mario and did crazy numbers on the DS, becoming one of the best selling titles on the system. Today a lot of people, myself included, have soured on the "New" smb style after Nintendo milked it to death during the 2010's. As a result I think a lot of people forgot that when it was fresh, it was actually really solid.

Going in without any preconceived notions about the game or style, this game absolutley rocks. It has so many creative ideas start to finish. interesting worlds, fun powerups (though i wish they were more prominent :/) and great music make this the perfect title to get Mario back up and running. The short levels are suited so well to the DS yet it somehow manages to keep everything that made the home console Mario games so appealing. My only real issue with the GB Mario titles was they were supremely easy and could be finished pretty quick. NSMB fixes this and offers a similer level of challenge as youd find in SMB3 or SMW. This is a full 2D Mario adventure on the go and even today I found that incredibly appealing.

This game does everything right so I can kinda see why Nintnedo was trying to replicate it for a decade straight. Its a shame that the game that (re)started it all for Mario is stuck on the DS but I seriously cannot reccomend it enough. Fantastic Mario title and a fantastic game.

Mario estandar, sigue siendo buen juego

The levels were amazing and so were the minigames. Everyone had this game, it changed a whole generation

This is peak 2D Mario. Unfortunate that they copied it for the next 10 games.
