Extremely ugly game and NSMBDS is a bad base game compared to Newer Wii's NSMBW. However this is balanced by having much better level design than Newer Wii.

it's missing...something. the level design just feels stiff, and star coins are placed out in the open. disappointing as someone who grew up watching newer wii lets plays.

many cool and interesting ideas in this one held back by gimmicky level design with lots of cheap obstacles

Best 2D mario and its not even close, can't enjoy most of the official ones after playing this

One of the best mario romhacks out there

Maybe if the NSMB games were more like this, 70% of the 2010s Mario games wouldn't be soulless.

Lots of creative ideas were piled in here. While the game is often full of lag, the new style of gameplay is a breath of fresh air for this series which struggles to find originality. Also, minecraft.

Épico, muy sólido para ser el primero

I think it shows pretty obviously that Newer DS benefits from years of additional insight when it comes to level design, and the NSMB DS engine (and how much mileage the Newer team gets out of it) lends itself better to these kinds of traditional-with-a-twist levels than what Wii had.

Simply put? It's a pretty good Mario game! Just like the last one, some of its strongest levels are genuinely clever.
But it's also an amateur one still - star coins often don't know how to run a happy medium between painfully formulaic and excruciatingly obtuse, for example.

I imagine this would be what it'd be like if I tried to create a Mario game after a few months, maybe a few years of studying the series' levels. Decently thought out in theory, but a bit by-the-book in areas where I probably would deviate from the norm would I know exactly how to.

It's still better than Super Mario Maker.

I think this is a fine experience but nothing you should be clamoring to play. The same polish in the actual New Super games aren't quite here, star coins are sometimes just placed wherever, and the levels get pretty gimmick-y. It's probably weaker than any of the actual New Supers, but it's made pretty well overall and if you really like these games you might as well give it a shot.

i think it has cool ideas, and sometimes said ideas are implemented fairly well, but sometimes the ideas don't really work too well. the level design kinda fell flat for me 9 times out of 10.

the soundfont they used for the music also doesn't really work for the songs they chose in my opinion, but some song choices were pretty cool such as the underground theme from yoshi's island.

i think this rom hack gave me a newfound appreciation for the work that goes into the actual NSMB games over at nintendo.

overall i didn't hate it but i think it could with some revisions maybe.

Pretty good game, excellent for a fan project. If you're craving some New Soup for whatever reason, this is certainly not a bad option, and I'd say it's about on par with the quality of the better games in the franchise. Don't expect anything too crazy though, it's a decently solid platformer with some pretty good levels sandwiched in between the occasional mediocrity.

What New Super Mario Bros. 2 should have been.

A fun game for Mario fans to enjoy. Takes what is available in the original New Super Mario Bros and expands on it with it's own ideas.

It can get a little frustrating in the final world (have wind physics in a 2D platformer ever been all that enjoyable) but apart from that this is a very enjoyable experience.

It's very impressive and always a treat to see stuff like the Minecart and the new boss fight, but I think it generally suffers from playing to the typical idea of what makes good level design to an overly formulaic degree. The Star Coins too are overly formulaic. It's relatively rare that Star Coins are a part of a miniature challenge in the level as opposed to just being offscreen hinted by a ledge. While the design philosophy at work is tired, the levels themselves are still great, my favorites include the one where you bounce around bullets as mini Mario, the race one in World 6, as well as pretty much every haunted house.

World 6 is a treat since although the game breaks away from the typical trappings of world progression the New Mario series is infamous for, World 6 is a great callback. The rest of the worlds are like two worlds in one most of the time, adding to variety in the latter half of the world usually.

This game does have the one feature I love in any Mario game, and it's that you don't have to play as him. You can switch at the start of any level, but you must only play as Luigi. If you are playing as Mario, you're doing it wrong.

Skawo out here developing some of the best Mario fan-games around.
