I think I somehow played the stand-alone S&K in a form, not sure if emulator or another way. Never found the stages from this game that much funny, definitely felt a downgrade compared to STH3's. Aesthetically they looked awesome, especially Sandopolis Zone.

That relatable moment when you need to make an entirely new game to finish your game.

It's Sonic 3, again!

Same movement feel, same bonus stages on the checkpoints, Blue Sphere(derogatory), same punchable Sonic sprite, only with less Michael Jackson. Still good! And very fun when played right after S3.

It's almost as if these were supposed to be one game... Hmm. Anyway, anyone else hungry for McDonald's?

Bonus clip from my run of the game: https://clips.twitch.tv/PrettyPricklyAxeDerp-cQLWqRrrVMfV9SQu

SO much better than the first half of Sonic 3. No save system sucks but the level design is less "Speed part where nothing happens > Rigid platforming section > Repeat" and more focused on actually optimizable platforming

S&K wow... truly was the knuckles we eggmanned along the way.
Cons: Missing a half the game
Pros: "& Knuckles"

When you're four years old, you're the biggest dumbass on the planet. You're a big stupid poo poo head. Any other idiot could walk up and pretend to pull a quarter out of your ear, and you'll be amazed and stop cleaning your ears out of fear of losing anymore quarters coming out of them.

When we came home with Sonic & Knuckles, I was astonished at this supposed new abra kapocus-hocus kadabra bullshit that has warped time and space to allow Knuckles to appear in Sonic 2. Woah, what are you doing Knucklehead, this is Sonic's game!! Not no more! The dumbass wheels in my dumbass kid brain started turning, then they started hitting the thick mud that made up the majority of my head and began digging up dumbass ideas that only a child with no concept of how things work would think of. I could make Knuckles appear in Sonic 2, clearly that means I could make Sonic characters appear in other games too! Alright Sonic, we're playing some goddamned football! Then what do you know, I get greeted with "NO WAY!" on the TV screen and become dumbfounded and insulted.

What do you mean you don't wanna play Joe Montana Football?!? What are you? An idiot?! I thought you were cool Sonic! I'm tired of my best friend stabbing me in the back. You think I'm playing? Sonic, I'm not playing. I'm gonna rip your head off. You're supposed to be my friend!

Flying Battery Zone solos the entire Mario franchise.

(Part 2 of 5)

For those of you who are familiar with the original Sonic the Hedgehog 3, then you would probably know that, despite how great it is, it is an incomplete game. Originally, the game was going to be much, MUCH bigger than what we ended up getting, with plenty more stages, bosses, features, and gameplay additions, one that we would eventually be able to get… but not right away. Due to deadlines needing to be met, the game ultimately had to be cut in half, with the first half of the game coming out as what we now know as Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which does explain why the game is pretty short and lacking in stages when compared to previous games. Thankfully though, the second half of the game would live on, and we would receive this second half of the game a whole 8 MONTHS after the first half of the game was released. Kinda understandable why it took so long, but either way, this second half of the game would be released under the guise of a brand new game known as Sonic & Knuckles.

Just like with the original Sonic 3, I myself have never played the original version of Sonic & Knuckles before, since I would, once again, always stick with the & Knuckles version of the whole game. For this review, I did end up playing through Sonic & Knuckles, as I did want to see what was different about this version of the game compared to the complete version. That’s one thing I forgot to mention in the previous review, that when I did play through that original version, I did notice quite a few differences compared to the & Knuckles version, such as different sprites, music, and even different bosses, so I wanted to see if this version would change up anything like that as well.

one playthrough later

It barely changes anything from the & Knuckles version. Nevertheless, for being the second half of Sonic 3, it is still pretty great, continuing the high-speed gameplay of the first half, giving plenty new and interesting gimmicks to mess around with as well.

For the most part, the game remains the exact same in terms of presentation from the original. The story picks up right where Sonic 3 left off, so nothing really changes in terms of plot, the graphics are the same, and all the new environments look pretty great, the music still continues the line of rocking, kick-ass tunes, and the control/gameplay is as tight, responsive, and approachable as Sonic 3. The only real difference between the two games is that there are now all new stages, challenges, and bosses to take on, and you can now play through the entire thing as Knuckles, which, believe it or not, actually has a little more meat on its bones rather then just simply being another character that you can play as.

In terms new additions, the only real new thing this part of the game offers is, again, new stages, each one of them does bring a somewhat new and interesting theme that we haven’t seen before, such as being in a hidden desert temple, a giant death fortress (which you can actually play through this time), and in one of Dr. Robotnik’s airships. For a good majority of these levels, they are pretty fun to play through, not only keeping the speed and platforming aspects of the series alive and well, but also introducing new types of hazards, gimmicks, and bosses for you to face along the way. Really, the only stage out of the bunch that I generally dislike would be Sandopolis Act 2, where you will spend most of the time trying to avoid getting crushed by rising sand, while also making sure to jump on all these hanging switches so that these ghosts don’t kill you. It’s not a bad stage, but it is one that can be pretty annoying to get through, especially if you are inexperienced.

Then there is the aspect of playing as Knuckles, which, rather than just being yet another character to play as like with Tails, actually has some proper extra things to play through and check out. It even has a completely different story, taking place after the events of the main game, where Knuckles now realizes that Dr. Robotnik is the bad guy in all of this, and one day while he is chilling on Angel Island, the EggRobo comes around and starts fucking everything up, so he has to go take him out. After that though, you are pretty much going through the usual stuff you have seen before, going through almost the exact same stages as before, as well as fighting the same foes, except the only difference is that there are some unique bosses to be found here, and again, you are playing as Knuckles, who can not only glide through the air (don’t ask me how he does it), but also climb up walls to reach hidden passageways. Personally, I don’t play as Knuckles that much whenever I go back to the classic games, because I am so used to playing as Sonic that he’s just my go-to, but Knuckles is a nice alternative just in case you want something a little different from what you are used to.

Once again though, like with the original Sonic 3, I can’t recommend playing this version of the game over the superior & Knuckles version, not just because that game has more stuff, but also because, compared to the original Sonic 3, this game is also pretty lacking in terms of content. In terms of zones, there are technically 8, but a good couple of these zones are just one-off shoots that only serve to progress the story or boss fights, so in terms of actual stages, there are still only 6. Again, that is completely justifiable given the circumstances surrounding this game, but that is worth mentioning regardless. Not to mention, it doesn’t have a lot of the bonus features that the original Sonic 3 had, such as not having any sort of competitive mode to it, and you can’t even save your game anymore! Having neither of those things isn’t a deal breaker for me, but still, kinda sucks that those things were completely left out of this second half.

Overall though, despite another understandable lack of content, as well some annoying levels to get through, Sonic & Knuckles is still a great game all on its own, one that I’m sure any Sonic aficionado would be able to get into, and one that is pretty fun to run through even to this day. I would recommend it for those who are Sonic fans, as well as those who are big into old-school 2D platformers, because just like its first half, this is one of the best titles that you can get on the Sega Genesis, as well as one of the best platformers of the 16-bit era. But anyway, now that we got that out of the way… I know why you all are here. You all don’t wanna hear about these solo versions of the game, nah, you want the REAL, prime version of Sonic 3. I hear you loud and clear, and I think it’s about time we finally get around to that.

Game #507

To be completely honest, I had alot more fun with Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Lava Reef, and even Death Egg than I did with HydroCity, Marble Garden, and even IceCap. Fun times. I did also enjoy Sandpolis and Lava Reef, even if those are regarded to be "not good".

Sandopolis is actually one of the best stages in this game; everyone bitching about it is having a skill issue

You have to applaud the boldness of making an echidna a key character in your flagship game.

The latter half of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, chopped off into its own cartridge with special features. Sonic & Knuckles is one of the strongest in the classic series, with Sonic's fantastic physics and moveset in top shape just like in 3. And just like that game, this one features six two-act zones that are both huge and incredibly dense with platforming challenges and occasional physics playgrounds. That said, a few nitpicks I've got with the levels and enemies in this one have me feeling a just a little less enthusiastic about this game compared to 3.

I'll start at an odd place and honestly the game's greatest strength: the story. Much like Super Metroid, this game is one that effortlessly tells an engaging character drama without any dialogue. Unlike the basic Eggman bases of other games (aside from the original Death Egg in Sonic 2), Sonic & Knuckles' third act is full of surprises and fun character interactions. The smaller details here also contributed a lot to the eventual lore of Sonic Adventure and the whole Echidna tribe story in the official games. That, and the general pacing of the levels is very strong and it feels more complete in the end than Sonic 3 when played alone.

The cartridge itself has a cartridge slot on top to "lock-on" other games, specifically designed to allow Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a hybrid game that skips 3's final boss and puts Sonic straight into Mushroom Hill, and a playable Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Other games don't unlock new features, but they do provide a game specific seed to the random Blue Spheres level generator built into the error screen. Praise be to Blue Spheres, the greatest special stage of all time.

My first major gripe is that this game has quite a few annoying level gimmicks. Sandopolis Zone has slow block pushing in its first act and the ghost timeout system in the second which is pretty tedious at times. Though, it's the one bad apple and the rest of the levels are very solid. Flying Battery and Death Egg stuck out as some of the best in my opinion. The real issue in my eyes is the game starts to lean into annoying enemies sort of like the ones in Sonic 2. With the different approach to level design and the insta-shield, it's not quite as bad. But still, both of these elements are downgrades from Sonic 3's remarkably consistent quality.

All of that said, I think this game was a great capstone to the Genesis/Mega Drive era of Sonic. It's a great platformer by pretty much all standards, with killer music and excellent visuals. The physics in this series is unlike anything else, and this entry does lean more into that than 3 in many cases. So I've got a lot of respect for it, even if it's not quite my favorite of the classics.

The 2nd half of Sonic 3 that elevates it to peak status. This is probably the best selection of Sonic levels you'll get in a 2D game until Mania released. This combined with Sonic 3 is nearly a masterpiece.

Uno de mis juegos favoritos. En mi infancia lo jugaba todo el tiempo. Hace muchos años que no intento ver si el SEGA génesis que tengo todavía funciona. Nunca pude finalizarlo.

Had a eureka moment when I realized I hate every sonic 3 stage after Hydrocity.

Good games in the Mega-Collection cleared (don't think I'm wrong, lmk)! Docking a point from first half for a slightly inferior aesthetic and no save system. Sandopolis just sucked. Sky Sanctuary was a beautiful standout. First time in one of these the back half exceeded the front half.

Es una obra maestra, pero lo mejor es jugarlo junto con Sonic 3

Played for a little while on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, using my cousins' Xbox 360. Did not make it past the first zone, as my time with it was more out of curiosity than anything.

Nota: 9

Not as good as 3 but a good finale to the original trilogy.

Pretty sure I played this on PC on my friend's older brother's computer back in like 2002. I'm almost certain it was this one, but the consoles don't line up? Emulator? Misremembering the title? Time is such a thief.

The Angel Island floating up in the sky at the end still amazes me.

NASCIA EM BELÉM EJSUS... DIVO DOS JOGOS DO SONIC... DE MARIA VIRGEM... FILHO DE DEUS...

Sonic & Knuckles is like Sonic 3, if they actually made most of the levels fun to play through. Still long in the teeth when it comes to the length, at least they don't feature a myraid of traps and gimmicks that slow the game to a crawl (except Sandopolis). More bangin tunes, more bangin gameplay and more awful blue spheres, this ones really got it all. Shoutouts to Sky Sanctuary Zone for being one of the best levels in all of Sonic's genesis outings.
