A very well-made successor to the first game. It feels much more like a classic JRPG compared to VP Lenneth. The story didn't quite click with me and it drags a bit in the middle of the game (chapter 3 takes forever and you're chasing after a McGuffin the whole time without anything happening^^).

The jump passages in the dungeons are sometimes really horrible and annoying. But the world design is really good, the atmosphere in the towns is very strong and the music was also great (but not as good as in VP 1). I also found it a shame that you only get backstory about the Einherjar in text form and not in cutscenes like in the predecessor. On the other hand, you now have a party with characters that have a bit more personality...Rufus was annoying :D

I know that all that sounds pretty negative but the game is great, fighting is fun, there are so many possibilities to put the party together and the hit feedback is really awesome. Still, for me it's much weaker than Lenneth.

Loved the first game and loved what I played of this too, just need to go back and finish it one day.

No other PS2 game even comes close to look half as beautiful as this game. Gameplay is unique and interesting, if a bit easy once you figure it out, the setpieces when walking around made me shed a tear, even on the starting town you can see how breathtaking everything looks, exploring the towns is a joy even if there's not much to actually do besides lurk around. Every random house is unique in it's modeling, it's honestly insane. Wish it had the old Einherjar recruitment system but i don't mind that much. Music is equally stunning, of course, Motoi Sakuraba did it again.
10/10, disregard naysayers

A simple but well told story with a unique and fun combat system. I really enjoyed the sealstone mechanic as well as the creative use of Alicia's photon ability. A bit too much backtracking, but hardly enough to be an actual problem.

One of my favourite games and best RPGs!

I loved the aesthetic, graphics, and surely the battle mechanic, using a 2D mechanic for map and exploration, and a 3D mechanic for battles, making you a real strategist, and adding to the replay factor, since every battle is a new one.

Amazing game, loved every mechanic of it. Extremely underrated and still one of the GOATs.

I love the battle system, but everything about the original is better to me. Also, the writing blows.

A much more conventional followup, Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria disposed of the original's loose world progression and adopts the worst traits from 00s era JRPGs: Doll-faced characters, muted aesthetic, hyper-cinematic/melodramatic, dialogue bloat, massive empty areas, etc. In fact, many aspects of the debut feel half-baked here, from platforming to recruitment, to dungeons and (especially) its action-leaning battle system. Now taking movement and positioning into account, combat more so revolves around maneuvering past enemy vision cones than combo mastery, compounded by awkward collisions and egregiously slow pacing. It succeeds only in its hyper-complex system mechanics, that pairs gear combinations with skill mastery and crafting that marked an importance on farming enemy loot. A deep set of systems and details without engaging combat to take advantage of it.

+ Amazing battle system
+ Game has next gen graphics for a PS2 game
+ Music gives atomsphere
+ Strategy over power leveling
~ Battle system is convulated
~ Tedious management
~ Story feels slightly missing
~ Cutscenes are done in a cinema style
- Spike in difficulty half way through the game and at the very tail end
- Most characters are rather dull / slow to grow
- Einherjar are severally cut compared to first game

I thought this would finally be the one JRPG I'd be able to push through all the battles and dungeons. I thought the gorgeous backgrounds (maybe the most beautiful cities and villages of any game I've played for the past few years) would make me wanna see everything. Maybe I wouldn't have to sidetrack a lot.

But I... I just couldn't...

awesome combat dreadful writing game is glacial. maybe i'll try vp1.

I love this. Cool character collection that isn't always the same makes for neat extra playthroughs. Combat is also a main draw and the platforming out of battles is excellent. Post game has a grind sadly, but it's to be expected. Great, solid playthrough and highly rec'd.

Há esse jogo, pra mim o melhor jogo de RPG do PS2, ótimos personagens, uma puta história com um final chocante kkkk amo esse jogo S2

This is the first time I actually dropped a game of my own fruition

I want to like this game, I really do. I enjoyed the first game and was excited to get into the sequel. While I was optimistic for the first 2 hours, the next 5 were just filled with apathy and indifference. I really do want to continue and find out what happens next in the story, but I just don’t care about it anymore.

The combat is definitely more layered and complicated than the previous game and I do actually like the gameplay quite a bit. My problem with the gameplay is a combination of 3 things: complexity, pacing and exp distribution. Individually, these things wouldn’t be a problem, but because all 3 of these things are an issue simultaneously, it becomes a major issue for me. I like the increased complexity, and I don’t mind the slower paced combat or the splitting of exp among party members…but…there are times in this game where I had to grind. The increased complexity led to a much slower paced game, plus, if you got 1000 exp, it would split that 4-ways to 250 exp each. It takes ages to level up. Because of this, I got annoyed and bored really quickly.

Now…I’m not sure if I missed an area or anything like that, but there were a few times where I was suddenly going up against mooks that were way more powerful than anything I was previously going up against. To put this into perspective, I went from doing roughly 80-90 damage to about 20-30, and on some characters, I’m doing less than 10 damage. Honestly, was I missing something?

If my issue wasn’t necessarily my levels, but equipment, that just means I needed to grind for money and items to sell…which also takes a bit of time. Speaking of equipment, the way you get skills in this game is pretty dumb if you ask me. If you played something like Final Fantasy 9, think of that, but more convoluted; you need to equip certain pieces of equipment and then do a bunch of killing to get those skills. In FF9, you just needed to equip one piece and then do a bunch of quick killing and you got your skill or spell. In Valkyrie Profile 2, not only do you need to make sure that the correct runes in your equipment slots are placed next to each other, but you also need to make sure it’s the correct color as well, making you fiddle with your inventory way more than you should.

The short version is this: If you want any of the good stuff, or if you want to get anywhere in this game, you need to do some serious (and tedious) slow-paced grinding. Unnecessary complexity is what killed my enjoyment of this game.

Just because something is more complex doesn’t make it better.

Esse pra mim foi melhor RPG que já joguei na minha vida certeza ele é meu top 1° de RPG's super recomendo.

Improve the battle system but didn't like the exploration parts. The story also can be a hit-or-miss in some places.

Excellent game. Story is cool but also i can see why some prefer VP1's, combat is amazingly addictive, graphics are outstanding, soundtrack is GODLY. Everything about this game screams quality and even though it's a prequel you should still play (or watch a lp) the first game before jumping into this game.

Improves on VP1 in a lot of ways. As far as gameplay is concerned, Tri-Ace took VP1's combat, added a third dimension, and considerably refined it. It's way more balanced, it has a lot more depth and is a lot harder to break. In other words, its god-tier.

Compared to VP1, the game is also a lot more linear and the story structure is pretty standard now. Not a bad thing at all, but personally I preferred VP1's structure. The game focuses on the main group way more, but in exchange, einherjar recruitment is now reduced to selecting an option and then reading some optional flavor text.

All in all, it's one of the greatest JRPGs ever made, and I would highly recommend it. Just make sure you play VP1 first, you absolutely need to.
