I had never played a Final Fantasy game until I played this, something about 16 entries made it a little daunting to get into. But I had this in my PS store wishlist for a while, and bought it on a sale.

Overall, I quite enjoyed the game. The story does a good job of setting up the rest of the story, while ensuring that it feels like its own arc rather than solely one third of a larger product. The characters were good overall, some of the Shinra villains were a little bland, but for the most part the side characters are good, and the main cast of Cloud, Tifa, Barrett and Aerith are all great. Aerith was easily my favourite part of the entire game.

I was a little mixed on the gameplay though. I know I'm not very good at real-time combat RPGs, I really suck at any Souls-like games, but this game just seemed to be thoroughly split between really easy passages and annoying gimmicky minibosses. It could be my stupid brain that can't use critical thinking skills from years of CoD and Siege that makes me bad at these kinds of games, but I'm pretty good at turn-based RPGs, so I don't know. The split between real-time and turn-based elements is okay, but I really hope they improved on it in FF7 Rebirth. The level design also got old pretty quickly, everything funnels into setups for a mini-boss fights that I would just get mad and yell at. And most of the boss fights were annoying as well, and so were the bike chases. While none of this sounds very positive, the gameplay is well polished, the special moves are pretty cool, and when the game lets you get into a rhythm it is pretty satisfying.

Despite some gameplay hiccups, I still that found FF7 Remake was worth playing, and all the cutscenes with Aerith were easily worth the $25 I spent on this game.

Boy howdy this was one coming that I kept going "I'll finish this when part 2 comes out" and then it did and I was playing P3R as is so I said "I'll do it after" and I started seeing spoilers for part 2 and said fuck it its time. GOD I WISH I FINISHED THIS BACK WHEN I PICKED IT UP!! Everything about 7Remake is so incredible, obviously its a completely new experience and all but the disc it tackles is handled amazingly with love and everything new....God I have so many questions but love the changes and things fleshed out its ridiculous how much content we have in just PART ONE

A remake of the beginning of the original game, FF7R aims to greatly expand this part, and it does an absolutely incredible job of bringing new life into this classic storyline.

They nailed everything about the tone and made me care for characters who were barely an entity before. It adds some new elements, which may go on to change the course of the story.. we will see.

The thing is, this is all a small part of a bigger picture. And while it’s entertaining stand-alone, some parts are rediculously drawn out just to make this feel like an equal part of the whole story. I didn’t mind overall, as the acting and animation carried it, but it’s something I hope the next game improves on.

The gameplay is absolutely incredible, combat takes beats from the original while being its own thing, it’s fast paced and chaotic, making any encounter blood pumping.

There’s plenty of variety in how characters play, and the amount of customisation you can get is insane.

The world is well designed and side quests are often short distractions that can only benefit you. It’s mostly linear, but opens up in an extremely clever way towards the end.

The game looks insane on the PS5 especially and the music is something else, beautifully remastered by the original composer, just wow. FF7R is an extremely enjoyable time, and while it’s clearly part of something bigger, it’s still great - 8.5/10

One hell of a game, you sometimes see its limits, but it is still completely worth it to play fully through.

Drags a little, but I loved this and I didn’t really expect to. Amazing gameplay, great story that is definitely stretched out a little but still very good. Can’t wait to play Rebirth, and maybe some other Final Fantasy games.

One winged angel theme goes hard and Sephorith is the best video game villain of all time

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a fine game. It looks good, plays well and has no glitches but it's overrated as hell.

[Also note I haven't played the original game so this review is from the perspective of someone who had only played remake and knows nothing else about the ff7 lore or whatever.]

Combat is fine, it's very simplistic and
you can usually get by by spamming square and ATB moves. There were a few instances where I had to strategize what to do and character placement to win but that was few a far between.

Midgar is probably one of the most distinct cities I've ever seen in a game though. I love the blue and cyan/green look of the city and how the city is designed. The city and its world building are pretty well done and concepts like mako and the running of Shinra are done really well. The only game I've seen out do it is probably the Bioshocks and System Shock 2, but i am irrational games biggest meat rider so that's to be expected lol. They should just make a game where you can drive around midgar and interact with things.

The characters are fine. None of them are written as real people and instead feel like tropes. Cloud is written to act like an emo teenage boy, Barret is written as a hothead turned dumbass, Wedge is written as the obligatory fat guy that loves food. This way of writing characters technically works (although some of the dialogue made me cringe for lack of a better word), but I much prefer when characters are written as real people that act realistically.

The character design is weird. The main and secondary characters have distinct outfits and are highly detailed, but the NPC's just wear normal clothes which creates a weird whiplash between the culture of midgar. Don't get me wrong some of them work and feel natural, but others (COUGH COUGH TIFA COUGH COUGH) just look like eye sores.

The story is also fine. It has its moments and I'd say 95% of the things that happen aren't filler but there's little to no impact on the characters which is weird. Sure, a few of them die but that doesn't move any of them or make them grieve. The closest there is is when sector 7 gets RKO'd but after that's all said and done the destruction of Seventh Heaven is mostly forgotten. I think the story's at it's best when it embraces the absurdity of its writing (that one part where you're on a motorbike with Jessie and that guy on the motorbike comes in was fucking stupid and probably the best thing in the whole game) or slows down to reveal things about it's characters and so you can take in the environment of midgar. I also think certain elements of it are clever like having Areith being able to communicate with the spirits in mako.

Overall Final Fantasy 7 remake is a fine game, I like it's worldbuilding and it was entertaining, but it's not anything that special outside of that.

Hot take, I like that it’s not the same as the original

Horribly bloated, sluggish mess held up by it's combat and graphical charm. Jenova and one winged angel theme kick ass tho.

aerith > tifa

yes i will fight over it

I fucking love the gameplay and story and i fucking love Cloud so much he is literally my husband and Tifa is my wife. And bringing my boy Zach back was fucking insane one of my favourite moments i've experienced

I definitely got it more this time. Recognizing it more as its own entity that stands alongside the OG than anything. I do think “Remake” wasn’t the correct title for it but I digress. I did come to appreciate the expanded characters for the Avalanche members generally, since getting to see the upper plates was cool. However, padding’s still yknow, a thing. Wall Market and the Train Graveyard are filled to the brim with it, and it can be a bit much. I used to hate the ending section but it’s interesting to me now, just seeing it more as its own thing, even if some things are screaming “hey bro remember Advent Children” or are outright quotes from it. Combat can be fun but I genuinely miss the turn based stuff. It’s still a really fun system, but seeing people say that this is better than the old one? Lol. And the padding can make bingeing the game harder. I’m less inclined to binge when I’ve played a padded segment. Love the performances and acting here so much. It’s a far less mixed bag than I remember, and I’m glad I revisited it.

Not really a remake but all of the moments you know and love are here in someway from the first part of FF7. The graphics are incredible but absolutely loathe the slow walk through a tight alley disguising a loading screen. But other than that, the combat and story are interesting enough and the voice work is great too. If you liked FF7, play it but don’t expect a 1:1 remake

god awful dialogue.

combat that lasts way too long and is just insanely monotonous.

graphics look pretty fire tho.
