Gameplay - 8/10
This game has, somehow, one of the most addicting gameplay loops ever, even if it is incredibly simple and sometimes annoying

Graphics - 9/10
For the time, its probably the best looking game in 1998

Performance - 10/10
This game would run on a roll of Cellotape and still be able to get 16.234859fps

Story - 6/10
Its a pretty engaging story and is probably the first game to have a story that doesnt develop around you, but in front of you

Price
This game is worth the price of £7.99

Alien, The Thing, Doom and Quake all had a baby with each other.

The legendary immortal classic that influenced the First Person Shooter genre was probably one of my very first games as a toddler without me knowing about playing it before. I never made it back when the Aliens attack and for some reason never played it until know.

As the headline suggests its easy to say that games like Doom and Quake had some influence on this games plot along with Ridley Scotts Alien and John Carpenters The Thing. The headcrab monster pretty much seems to be inspired by the facehugger from Alien, while the infected Zombies reminist on the humans that the Thing from the movie The Thing took over.

What sets this apart from other FPS games from its time is the way the game tells its story. The story itself is rather simple yet its the way the game used the gaming world and its environment to tell the story is what makes it.

The gameplay is pretty solid as it uses your typical FPS combat along with some puzzle solving. Enemy variety is pretty good but I will say that we had FPS games with better monsters before and after. What kinda baffles me that the human soldiers you fight are mostly a bigger threat than the Alien enemies which is kinda weird since monsters normally should be more dangerous. The shotgun is also kinda lame to use against humans. Firstly because of the low damage it does and second because you can't blow enemies heads away, yet you can explode them into pieces. Other than that the game has good weapon variety. The game can also become kinda frustrating at points but that might be more of a skill thing rather than the games own quality. At least you can save whenever you want and the game still uses checkpoints.

The sound design is pretty amazing. Never was it more fun to smack a crowbar into a wall. Amazing noises. The headcrabs also sound kinda adorable lol.

I wouldn't call Half-Life a masterpiece like some others do but its still a pretty damn good game and a must play for every FPS fan.

8/10 Resonance Cascades.

I played this game more so because it was a game that revolutionized the gaming industry but nothing more

I actually can't believe how good this game is and how much it holds up despite being 20+ years old.

Spoiler alert: This is another case of me liking the first game more than I like the sequels, and that is because this game also serves as kind of like a horror game, where you have to escape a science facility that is trying to kill you every 10 seconds.

I absolutely adore how horribly wrong things go here. From the moment the resonance cascade happens, everything is already destroyed, there are corpses all over the place, and you are just hopelessly running around with nothing but one thought in your head....To get out. This game takes the same idea as Portal but doubles down on it and spins it on it's head.

Not everything is perfect tho, the game is admittedly dated in some areas. I don't like the on rails section of the game too much...And the alien planet just felt pretty rushed, ugly and lackluster.

However, those are miniscule downsides to what is otherwise a timeless game. If you haven't played it yet, give it a shot! I am currently replaying it actually, and I can't wait to play Black Mesa after I am done with this one.

It has aged remarkably well! I had a fun time for the most part, but I have to admit that parts of it were very, very annoying. The shooting is fun, I like fighting the zombies and army dudes, but the more advanced stuff made me use the quicksave feature a bit too much. The exploration and "puzzle" parts are the highlight here, I loved traverseing this world, especially after binding jump to scrollwheel and just going ham- bunnyhopping is SO MUCH FUN. The weapons are cool, I really wanted an assault rifle though, and another shotgun probably. The end is cool, but leading up to it sucks ass. The last boss is super annoying and the tanky aliens aren't fun to fight.

It holds up surprisingly well, but "black mesa" is probably the better option. I had a lot of fun trying to break the game with my knowledge of CSGO surf and KZ stuff, and b-hopping in here was SUPER fun.

Um prazer jogar uma das maiores influências da indústria. O mistério é sensacional.

they should make a second game

it’s clear why this game was so good on release. there was nothing quite like it and it definitely pushed the genre and the industry forward. the narrative is told entirely through people and no cutscenes which is honestly really impressive. i do wish there was more explanations on what is going on however. the gunplay is fun and immersive, especially for 1998. it’s surprising how much you don’t want to put down a gun in half-life. it’s also a really good early stage of advanced enemy ai. you get to see reactive enemies with interesting behavioural and somewhat random patterns.

unfortunately, the game hasn’t aged all that well and the last couple missions are actually where it’s noticeable how outdated the game is. the levels are confusing messes and is just endless hordes of aliens. the final boss is also a very unsatisfying fight. you’re constantly dying just because you’re getting shot at non stop and are needed to move constantly. i wouldn’t replay half-life but i definitely appreciate it existing.
