Here’s one that took me forever to get to. Fortress of Fury for the Game Boy is the first in a trilogy. A few years ago I played the last one in the trilogy for the SNES and I liked it. I really should replay it sometime. It’s time to give the first GB game some love and yeah it was actually a good game.

You go through four stages fighting off enemies and contraptions as you go through room after room to eventually find the boss. You control Masato and Mizuki. Masato is the one you’ll be using more as you can give him more power along with his secondary weapons with the likes of stuff like multishot, three way shot, flamethrower, and grenades. Mizuki can’t use secondary weapons but she has the ability to jump which can help in some rooms like ones with spikes or conveyor floors.

The game is pretty easy as I never even died once and you seem to have continues when I checked before reviewing the game. You can also use passwords if you don’t feel like beating it in one sitting. None of the enemies or mini bosses or bosses will challenge you. The most you’ll feel threatened is by getting touch damaged by a boss that deletes your whole health bar. Though once you know this it’ll probably not happen again. The 2nd half of the game will have two floors to go through but it never really feels challenging or even having a chance of getting lost. The game for the most part can still stay engaging though by the last stage it can feel too empty and boring.

If you’re playing the Japanese version you can even do some special codes like making Mizuki’s sprite a SD style. Just put in “YURI” as your password and you’re good to go. It even lets you swap characters by pressing start so you don’t even need the menu anymore. There’s also a password for unlimited health but I might judge you if you need that for a game like this. There’s also a cool sound test that lets you mess around with the different instruments of the songs. Speaking of the music, it’s fine. It sounds nice and fits the GB but I do feel like it’s a tad repetitive but it could be a lot worse. The game graphically looks pretty good for 1991, with some great looking sprite art and environments but they do start to get samey looking. It also sadly has you fighting bosses in the void of black nothingness.

This was a pleasant game to go through. Got some fun action and nothing about it is really that poor in design besides it being too easy. You can’t go wrong with Fortress of Fury and it’s an easy recommendation if you want something good to play on the handheld. It could be better but sometimes it’s fun to play a game that’s still just considered good at best. I mean it is good for a reason. I’ll probably play the sequel soon. The game was on 3DS virtual console but as you know already, service is gone. Maybe it’ll show up on NSO sometime this year. I just wish Jaleco was more consistent like why couldn’t more of their games be fun like this. It's not fair!
