A simple, gorgeous jam session of a game. A dismissible (but thankfully skippable) story, but damn if I didn't dig how it made me feel like I was a Celestial Rock God.

Loved the story and the music element, gameplay Can get a bit boring and repetitive towards the end

The way people talked about this game I was half expecting the next Journey!

Yeah... It's not Journey. I know everyone wants the next Edith Finch when it comes to these walking sim style games. This just isn't it. Not for me at least.

You play as a young musician struggling to find his own sound. Buried in the shadow his uncle who was a famous folk artist. At times it feels like the character is finding himself, abandoning expectations, and learning not to care what others think. Unfortunately the majority of the game just feels like nonsense all slapped together as an excuse to show of crazy visuals and wild art. Seriously, don't try to make much sense of what's going on. The art is really good though. It's impossible to play this game without having a "wow look at that" moment along the way.

These style of games aren't really my thing, but I respect it for what it is. I always say these are less games and more experiences. It doesn't overstay it's welcome, which for someone like me is a great thing. I was starting to itch for some gameplay.

I'm the kind of person who, with the right kind of crescendo in instrumental music, will openly weep at its beauty for no comprehensible reason. And I absolutely love space-opera music. Combine that with my own struggles to find my own place in my art, trying to reshape the box everyone expects me to fit into... plus that time of the month fast approaching, and I'm a crying mess ready to join the cult of Simon Says Run & Gun.

I'd have liked it a little more if it weren't so linear (so many stellar environments and no Z-axis ability whatsoever), had a little more room to jam with the open notes (as opposed to holding the one button 90% of the time, with 9% Simon Says, and only 1% open jam), and extended JUST beyond where it ended to talk with people about the last performance. And the drug-trip slingshot from the Cosmic Lung to other areas got a little tedious. Woulda been fun to change it up, even a little, each stage.

But I loved the music, the star-studded cast, the eventual customization of my character, and messages. I know it's not something that's gonna ring with everyone, but this just hit me at the right time.

I’m fine with this type of walking-sim/experiential game, but this did not do it for me. While the visuals are fantastic, the gameplay was virtually nonexistent, the musical was surprisingly unremarkable, and worst of all, the narrative was fairly unremarkable. The themes were overdone and too shallow in general, with a plot line that was pretty predictable — not enough to make up for the other shortcomings.

The game certainly has its moments, and if it looks appealing to you, I wouldn’t advise against trying it. It doesn’t ask much of you in terms of time, skill, or thought, and while that might make it easy to recommend on one level, it also means that it might not be worth the recommendation at all.

Saw this on game pass and loved the idea behind it, but I dunno, the art style didn't appeal to me, the music could have been so much more, and I quickly fell off this

The game takes a surprising amount of care in allowing you to experience the transformation of the character over the course of the game. A nice, short burst of creativity.

RIP Carl Weathers

Beautiful and unique game about artistry drags on at one point but still worth playing.

A game about self-doubt, living in the shadow of someone else's and breaking free to be who you always want to be. One of the best visuals in games. But tbh, more like an experience than an actual game.

A little platinum with a great artstyle. Really short but some parts of the game are fun.

Excels in what you'd expect, the music and the theme. Bit too on the nose for the latter but that's neither here nor there. Fun couple of hours for sure.

It was a short but lovely game with amazing visual, perfect for a weekend game

Excelente juego. Juego corto y platinable. Totalmente recomendado!!!

Decided to platinum this game as something to do for a couple of hours and expected to be blown away by how much people were hyping it up. Boy was I disappointed.

Artful escape is yet another short but sweet indie game. Its filled with tons of life and personality. The main focus of the game is on music and honestly the music in this game is great. The visuals are also amazing and I really like some of the characters. The gameplay is pretty mid but the game is still pretty good. 7/10

Reviewing every game i've fully completed #17

GREAT game, existencial crysis, space, LSD... ohhh it has some music too

Joguem!!

I don't care if it's extremely short, I don't care if, as a game, it's functionally simon says + a walking simulator with some light platforming elements.
The gameplay does not matter in a game like this. Just chill and enjoy the ride. It's more of an "art piece" than a game.

All I'm saying is that this game has SOUL.
This really feels like a passion project made true, with the topics probably being something personal to the creator(s?)

The highlights are the great sound design, fantastic character and world designs, great visual effects, and a story about family, legacy, expectations and finding who you are.
Sure the graphics aren't anything crazy but they are the kind that stands the test of time.
It's stylish and, most importantly, unique, and that is the value of this game. Just like what the main character learns: It's better to be yourself, in all of your creative weirdness and imperfections, than to be a lame copy of another's success.

The idea is great, and the music is nice. The problem is quite simple: it is too boring. To the point that even been a small game, it was a chore to finish after 5 hours.

Visually extremely impressive, aesthetically innovative game about the self-discovery of a young guitarist who has to escape his uncle's "shadow" and embarks on an intergalactic tour. A crass art style, very good music, absolutely banal gameplay, but that's not the point of the game. The story is good, all in all a nice compact game of self-discovery.

Regardless of how rough around the edges the game is (and those edges are rough) the message and style of the game fully succeed in creating a colourfully unique experience. The Artful Escape is, unsurprisingly, an art > game experience with limited gameplay which I am usually a fan of. However, when the barebones gameplay constitute so much of the runtime of an already short game, it left a sour taste in my mouth. For a game that centers around the idea that you need to be your own person and make what you want to make, the game is strictly linear in its storytelling and gameplay. In a game about making your own music, the game doesn't let you chose what to play most of the time which in my opinion, detracts from the overall message. Despite its flaws, The Artful Escape is a stylish, musically rich and charming game that succeeds at its goals and is well worth playing.

A great story about family and legacy that's heavier on art then actual gameplay which I enjoy. The gameplay mostly consists of rhythm minigames but as I said the audio and visuals while the minigames are going on are some of the main draws for me. The story hits very close to home as it's about standing out from your parents and learning who you are separate from them while also appreciating and understanding where you came from.

Really interesting game, with incredible music.

A spacetime rock 'n roll fever dream that will take you through beautiful landscapes, incredible characters and an astonishing soundtrack. Not very heavy on the gameplay itself, so it's great for when you just want to sit back and enjoy an explosion of colors and song.
