How does this get made and released? The year was 2006, hadn't we figured out what was required for a AAA release by that point? There's so many things in this game that were perfectly fine in Sonic Adventure, which came out 8 years earlier. This game feels like it came out before Sonic Adventure. What the fuck happened? They already had a good foundation to build from! In theory this game is very similar to Sonic Adventure but it's just a little bit... off. Why are the hub areas so massive when they weren't that way in Sonic Adventure? Why does Sonic awkwardly preserve all his momentum when he changes direction during a jump, even though Sonic Adventure did it correctly? Why don't enemies die when I jump on them like in Sonic Adventure? Why am I forced to play as other characters even though I fucking selected Sonic, when that isn't the case in Sonic Adventure? In that game, if I wanted to play as Tails, I'd fucking choose Tails from the menu. I don't want to play as Tails, I want to play as Sonic. This isn't complicated! Sonic 06 is full of things that make you go wonder why they were chosen, why they had to happen.

I suppose the real question is why I chose to play it... and I really don't know. It was five bucks on the Xbox store so I figured there isn't much to lose. Don't make my mistake, just leave the game alone.

Sadly this game was very much a victim of bad decisions at Sega. I don't remember the full story but I know one of the bigger ones was later in development, they literally cut the team in half to go make a new Sonic game for the Wii. Combine that with it being rushed like crazy and the game was already going through troubles even before the split, it was a really awful set of events. All just to release it on the 15th anniversary of the franchise.

@Angel_Arle , yeah very unfortunate. The thing about anniversaries though is to celebrate the legacy of the series, but what is the point of doing that if this is how a series is treated.

A game set for launch on an anniversary is bound to either be overworked or rushed. Anniversary games are stupid. (With a few exceptions ofc.)

a great idea would be to make the game because you have a good idea for a game and not because the franchise is popular and releasing a game on it's anniversary would be successful. Sonic Adventure 2 released on the 10th anniversary and that's a good video game that is... um... finished. And not broken. Like they set out to make a game they had an idea for and decided to release it on the anniversary after development had finished. Why couldn't they do that again? Or god forbid just not release it on the anniversary. Clearly lots of effort was put into this game given how it can sometimes be decent fun when it works properly, and how great the soundtrack is and even how great the environments look on occasion. They certainly wanted to make a good game... so fucking let them! If you have so many talented, passionate people working on games for your company, let them make the damn games! Don't ask them to rush something they might not even want to make! It makes me upset

I think Sonic 06's legacy is so hilarious because of how overblown it is. There are definitely worse games in the series, and just worse games in general, so it's funny to see mfs be like "one of the worst games of all time" yeah the game sucks but there is infinitely worse shit elsewhere. I think the reason why this one in particular became such a massive topic for years was the fact that unlike other sonic games that are bad like the game gear stuff, this game was marketed to hell and back so it's eventual failure became so widespread. Not defending this game btw, I just think it's infamy can be funny to think about at times

I got 1000 achievement points on this back in the day. It was absolutely grueling due to falling through floors, rails, bugs, obtuse paths on some levels, the hideous load screens. This game is just truly a complete train wreck.

@Reddish people have a hard time making the distinction between their most hated games and the actual worst games ever made.

I think it's worth mentioning that deep, deep within this clusterfuck I see a good game. I understand why someone who grew up with it and learned to play around the funky stuff would like it a lot. The music is pretty awesome, some of the stages are really cool and inspired, and you might get something out of the story if you've ever wanted to kiss sonic the hedgehog while you're dead (I'm guessing that's in the super duper ending that you get if you play all of the campaigns, and I ain't doing that shit so I didn't see it)

@FallenGrace I don't understand the completionist mindset. I could never put in so much effort for something like this. I admire your dedication

P-06 by ChaosX is basically the video game equivalent of The Phantom Edit. Feels like what could have been in a number of ways, but it doesn’t automatically redeem vanilla in the same way Phantom Menace isn’t a better movie just because someone else could better edit it.
