Playing this game blind is probably really bullshit but when I first experienced it as a kid I was following the guide on ZeldaDungeon religiously and that information is gonna stay with me until the end of time so I will never know. I can say though that the gameplay itself is still insanely fun. The combat in the 2d Zelda series has always felt great and given how primitive the dungeons are here that is pretty much what this whole game ends up being. This is probably the Zelda game where (at least from the ones I've played) I feel compelled to use non-sword weapons the most when not in areas where you're forced to.

Large amount of Keese and Gels? Boomerang spam. Need to make distance between you and a Like Like? Boom, Candle. Can't hit a Darknut because they keep changing direction last minute? Try a bomb or two, they nuke Landmola as well. Glorias and Lynels being annoying and doing like 2 hearts of damage because you didn't know the blue ring existed? Boomerang again. That thing stuns 70% of enemies and is probably the most useful item in the game. Blue Wizzrobes are still assholes though and have no counter. Fuck them.

If you don't mind using a guide for the obtuse puzzles on your first playthrough I definitely recommend checking Zelda 1 out. It's a game that I think shines more on subsequent playthroughs when you already know where to go and have experience dealing with all the game's obstacles.

A game defined by its first-installment weirdness for me. Some minigames have fail states that end them early, some have wordless tutorials or don't have one at all, a good chunk of songs just loop and fade out instead of having an outro, and most of the remixes feel severely underdeveloped both visually and gameplay-wise.

Despite all that though it's still your classic Rhythm Heaven experience. For every lacking minigame there are one or two extremely heavy hitters. Just be warned that this game is much stricter on Okay/Superb ratings compared to Fever and Megamix. Often there are specific inputs that if you don't hit cause you to go down a rank.

Personal favorites: Bon Odori/Dance, Tap Trial 2, Space Dance, The Snappy Trio, Polyrhythm 2, Sick Beats, Spaceball, and Bunny Hop.

Getting sent back to Hyrule Castle every time after a game over was genuinely a game-ruining decision. I absolutely love the combat and difficulty in Zelda II, but it's really hard to enjoy it when you start spending more time getting back to a palace then actually playing it.
