Games I played in 2020

Nothing here!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
I had borrowed my friend's 3DS and had traded my copy of twilight princess for Ocarina of Time 3D. My old roommate also sold me A Link Between Worlds and Pokémon Y for $20 total, so I played through this again after finishing OoT. Great way to start off the year. I hadn't played this game in years, but I was immediately reminded of why I love it so much. I think it blows A Link to the Past completely out of the water, modernizing it and completely removing all of its outdated design and age to make it even more timeless.
Pikmin
Pikmin
For some reason I had the brilliant idea to play through some of my friend pants' favorite games, and we started with Pikmin. I think it's an incredibly frustrating game, poorly designed at multiple points, and yet I found myself thinking about it so much. I never actually finished it; I was so fed up with the forest navel that I just watched my friend beat it for me, and even he agreed that the situation I put myself in was pretty disastrous. This is one I'll replay again someday, and I think I ultimately came out a fan, but I won't forget what this was like my first time through.
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country
My first marathon this year was playing through a bunch of SNES classics. Started with DKC. First half is great, second half sucks, never beat it.
Mega Man X
Mega Man X
Not a fan. So many changes from the classic series that I didn't like. Also never finished.
Kingdom Hearts III
Kingdom Hearts III
Replayed again on proud, then played through the DLC on both proud and critical. Needless to say KH3 is a much better game now, and Re:Mind is probably my favorite thing that ever happened to this series.
Pokémon Platinum Version
Pokémon Platinum Version
A bunch of my college friends and I played through Pokémon together. I never finished this particular playthrough since quarantine hit in the middle of it and I felt unmotivated to continue since I couldn't play it with my friends. Still had fun though, and this was my first time playing the game with all 3 starters, with was completely broken.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
This is the most "meh" game I've ever played. I also didn't finish this one, and there are some things I don't like about it, but overall I don't have a positive or negative opinion on it, it's just there. This is my new measuring stick for determining the quality of games: if I liked it more than Yoshi's Island, then I like the game, if I didn't like it as much as Yoshi's Island, then I didn't like it.
Kirby's Adventure
Kirby's Adventure
Not an SNES game, but I figured I'd play it anyway. I actually liked this more than the other SNES games I played, even though I still didn't finish it. I don't know, these old platformers are such a slog for me to get through, but I think Kirby's unique mechanics kept things engaging and fresh enough for me to see it through as far as I did.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
The game that kicked off quarantine. I really liked it for the first 40-ish hours, but then the tedium kicked in and I lost interest. It makes so many advancements for Animal Crossing, but I think that had the unintended effect of making the archaic elements in kept in feel even worse. I also found the game gave me no reason to keep coming back besides my own creativity, but that wasn't enough for me.
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts
Had an itch to play through KH1 again over spring break, so I did and I liked it more than I had in the past I think. I played on proud, which was surprisingly and refreshingly challenging. I didn't 100% it this time, but I still had fun.
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey
I don't know I feel compelled to play this game so many times. This was my sixth or so time playing this, and the only time I didn't 100% it. I just couldn't be bothered. My opinion on this game never improves, but I still get the urge to play it and I don't know why. I just want an Odyssey 2 that I can actually enjoy and forget this game.
Pokémon White Version
Pokémon White Version
I attempted my first Nuzlocke over quarantine. Part of it was because I wanted to finally do one, but also because I chronicled my journey on my college's discord server to try and keep everyone connected. It was a lot of fun, and I named all my pokémon after my friends, so that was neat.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Definitely my game of the year. I love almost everything about this game, and I'm really looking forward to what happens next.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Sony gave away the Nathan Drake collection for free, so I jumped right on that shit. Playing the first game wasn't fun. I didn't like the platforming, I didn't like the vehicle sections, and I didn't like the shootouts. So basically I didn't like anything about it.
Sonic Mania
Sonic Mania
I forgot that I played this game again. I still go back and forth about how much I like this game. I think it's objectively better than S3&K, but the old genesis games have a certain charm that mania doesn't quite replicate for me. Not sure what it is, but I think I like it more now that I've played it again.
Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal
Once spring quarter ended I dedicated my summer to this game. It was a wild ride and I ended up playing it twice in a row. I love it but I still hate the story. I have a lot to say about it, but the story just gets worse and worse the more I think about it. When I get a PS5 I'm going to play the original version through PSplus.
Pokémon Emerald Version
Pokémon Emerald Version
First time playing through gen 3 and I really liked. I wanted to play Alpha Sapphire this year too for comparison, but I never got around to that. One day soon.
Pikmin 2
Pikmin 2
Me and pants back on the Pikmin grind. The sequel doesn't have the same issues as the original, but it's frustrating in its own ways. I also didn't think about this game as much the original, likely because the focus on dungeons took away from the world.
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
ended the summer by replaying this. Still a masterpiece. I love it and learn more about it every time I play.
Among Us
Among Us
Sorta came out of nowhere, but I played this a lot when it got really popular. I'm really looking forward to getting my friends back into it when the new map drops.
Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64
3D all stars came out. Mario 64 is ok.
The World Ends with You
The World Ends with You
I've been meaning to replay this for so long. I don't know when I'll finally get around to it again, but this one of my new favorite games and I have pretty much no complaints. I need to play it again before the anime drops though.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe
Pikmin 3 Deluxe
Me and pants beat this in one night. This is the best one by a mile, and I've been itching to play it again on harder difficulties.
Dark Souls III
Dark Souls III
I love this game. It's better than DS1 in almost every single way and I can easily recommend this to people who are intimidated by the series.
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
I had a lot of fun with this. I still play it every once in a while too, because the game is solid and Yoko Shimomura's work is absolutely incredible. I really wish there were more songs though.
Minecraft
Minecraft
I finally played this for the first time over Christmas break with my college buddies. It was pretty fun. We built a Christmas village, I got blown up by creepers about 15 times and lost everything, I defended my friend in a MineCraft divorce trial, then the plaintiff tried to frame my client by blowing up the courthouse after losing, but we found her and subsequently executed her. It was a blast.
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Sunshine
Best sandbox Mario game, and I say that as someone who played all three of them this year, two of them for the first time. The most imaginative locations, the most solid platforming, and the most charm.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
I like the sprites but I wish I played the 3DS version instead.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
My least favorite of the Zelda games that I like (ALttP can go suck it)
