Back at it again in kamurocho.

I have pretty mixed feelings about this game. It isn’t bad but it’s not great.

With this game being a new engine, of course the combat would feel really off from the rest of the series. This would be how future Yakuza game would feel but I do hope they flush it out more by the time Yakuza 8 rolls around. With enemies and even yourself flip flopping all over the place, I don’t need to go into how janky some fights feel but they do and thats what hinders this game.

However with the new engine, comes insanely improved graphics. Visually speaking, this game looks fantastic. Walking through the streets at night is really something to see and impressed me in the first hour.

This game had a lot more of a serious tone and that even bleeds to the sub stories a bit. Not saying there was no funny moments, there was but one thing I really like about the series so far is the good balance between its serious and goofy moments. The side stories are not as good as previous games.

The mini games are almost all copy and pasted which is kinda disappointing. The only new one that I noticed was the clan builder side game which is fine and all but with how the engine works with moving people around, it’s tough to keep track of everyone and everything happening on screen. Also kinda weird what Kiryu does at the video store.

The soundtrack was pretty weak. The main battle theme is like a jazzy funk thing that I feel doesn’t work for Kiryu.

The main story is a mess. There are so many names, places, groups and whatnot being thrown around, tossed out, brought back, switched out that I really had no idea who the heck anyone is talking about or what even is going on. There are so many plot line and antagonist switch outs that it really got as ridiculous as that random golden castle that popped out of the ground for no reason. I couldn’t take anyone seriously by the end of the game.

The ending itself was… really lame and didn’t have that much of an impact.

The Majima side story:
This honestly was the star of the show for how short it was. It’s always a great to play as the mad dog Majima himself whenever we get the chance to. His move set is great and feel a lot different from Kiryu just like in 0. Even with the new engine jank and the broken spinning move. Also I really love what happens in the last chapter. Wraps up his story from 0 very nicely.

Would I recommend this game? Only if you’re getting into the series and want the full experience. Looking at it on its own, no I wouldn’t.

Also that fire tiger crap the battle arena is mad stupid.

3 golden castles out of 5.
