i really love the idea of this list, and i've seen a bunch of people doing it. thought i should give it a try!
it's pretty clear to see how my tastes developed over the years with this

LSD: Dream Emulator
LSD: Dream Emulator
1998 - A game that inspired a lot of my aesthetic values, and set in my mind that a game being interesting is infinitely more important than it being "good" or "bad"
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike
1999 - The game that kicked off my lifelong love of fighting games.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

2000 - Built my real life music taste for decades to come, and set in stone a deep respect for arcadey bullshit.
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Adventure 2
2001 - I've spent years struggling to defend my love of this game, and it's taken a long time to understand that my defense doesn't really matter, as long as how I feel about it is 100% genuine.
Resident Evil
Resident Evil
2002 - I would not love horror in the way I do now if not for this game. It's everything to me.
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 3
2003 - uhhhh heather may have made me realize some gender stuff, and that isn't directly related to the game, but that crossed with just adoring this game kiiiinda makes this an easy pick

Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 4
2005 - Ruined third-person shooters for years, but in exchange made one of the most well crafted action games ever made.
God Hand
God Hand
2006 - Defending this game is hard, considering the game style is super niche and somethings about it were aged horrible at the time it was made (the extremely misogynistic and homophobic depictions of characters... not good), but I connected with people over this game, and it let me learn a better understanding of the mechanics of the games I love.
Also, the soundtrack? Bops.
No More Heroes
No More Heroes
2007 - I shouldn't have played this when I did but it was also the perfect game to play at the time, at around 12. Anime had taken hold, and unfortunately has left its mark on my taste.
Burnout Paradise
Burnout Paradise
2008 - You go so fast and Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" is on a loop. You have no responsibilities, you have rammed through a chain-link fence, and everything is alright.

2009 - This game ruined my brain.
Alan Wake
Alan Wake
2010 - I think I just love Remedy, and this is the game that solidified it. I go about to this one every time during the fall; it just has the feel to it.
