Give Me A Game and I'll Talk About Its OST

its bandwagon time

you know the drill... gimme a game soundtrack, I'll give Opinions and Takes!

Metal has always been that genre that I’ve respected immensely, especially considering guitar and bass are sort of my bread and butter, but I can also be honest and say it's never been my thing. But… even with that in mind, there’s this perfect little slice of metal that ends up speaking to me here and there, usually leaning hard into the thrash metal side of things. I can look at this track list and recognize how great it is, but the shit that really speaks to me is… probably Testament, Skeletonwitch and of course ya boiz Dragonforce. Shit rips, without a doubt.

What can I say, Masafumi Takada is a killer. The bass line in the main theme is never getting out of my head, absolutely stellar shit. Danganronpa is a game I have a messy relationship, but the soundtrack is just wall-to-wall bangers that I gladly shove in everyone's face.

While the whole soundtrack is filled with songs that mean a lot to me, the one I constantly find myself drawn to is Grandma. It’s… hard to pinpoint. There’s this whole melancholic build the song pulls you through, the piano creating an entangling spiral dragging you along the track, all supported by these pounding snares that sink into you. I keep coming back to it, and I’m always reminded of characters that mean so much to me all through this song that has dug its way into my soul.

As much as tracks like Authentic Sky, Kitsch and Bit Crusher stand out as certified classics, the element that always burns into my brain when I think of Tekken 4’s soundtrack is the atmosphere, the choking pressure and anxiety that permeates throughout. Breezing through, the highpoints of the set list come off as Namco’s sound team showing mastery over the aural essence of hype, but tucked away are these moments of sickening dread that feel entirely alien to the genre. Fetus, the de facto theme of the game’s arcade mode, uses string noise to bring out these haunted howls throughout the track, culminating in a portentous pop off that still sticks with me, while Nothingness, the game’s continue theme is… dire. It sounds like something out of Resident Evil or Silent Hill, not an effortlessly cool fighting game.

The vibe tracks like this set not only break up the pace of the more upbeat, trance-y and rock-y tunes, but help establish a particularly unique identity for Tekken 4 that I’m such a sucker for.
