Honestly I was really disappointed by this one
Played it on difficult (which from what I can gather is the intended difficulty) and it felt like a good game buried underneath a ton of needlessly frustrating and frankly unfair level design choices

idk i'd say 3, 6, and 8 are easier tbh
eh this one's actually on the easier side of the MM series but definitely agree on it being disappointing. never liked this one and found its stages to be boring and/or irritating
3 is way harder due to the doc robot stages imo
I liked this one a lot because I played it immediately after 1, and it's such a stark improvement, so that's probably why. It also has my favorite NES soundtrack, so that's part of it too

also many of the "unfair" choices you probably have in mind (i assume heat man's disappearing blocks, much of the wily stage design, and quick man's beams) can be surpassed by clever usage of weapons and items.
also yes - difficult is the intended way, as the japanese version didn't have a selection.
