This game is so fucking cool
Soma Cruz is an all time great video game himbo. He is extremely hot despite wearing the worst pants of all time. He is an ostensibly normal bro who, despite being a Solid Snake guy who just bumbles through the entire story not knowing what’s happening and confusedly repeating everything anyone says to him, somehow ALSO doesn’t seem particularly bothered by the outrageous happenings going on. His jacket is fucking cool. Just a funny chill guy, I love him.
The game is good too! My experience with castlevania is limited to the NES games and the Lords of Shadows, so going in on a nice bite sized SOTN-like was a little different for me, and it rules! The game feels very big while actually operating in a compact, easily navigated world that still has tons of secret little nooks and crannies. The metroidvania “ohh there’s an item on this ledge that you want but can’t access, better comeback later” design philosophy is pulled off really well here, thanks to a combination of really tight map design making this things easy to remember and revisit, and the brisk pace of the game meaning that you’re getting new abilities at an extremely steady clip.
The game is also simply gorgeous. Pushing the GBA to its limits in terms of visual presentation, managing to capably invoke the super clean 32 bit stylings and animations of its PlayStation grandad with only a few obvious cut corners. The music is also characteristically excellent, even if I would have preferred a score that adapted itself to the GBA soundchip instead of one that tried its best to be a PlayStation soundtrack in spite of the obvious limitations of the hardware.
When I was a kid my best friend had a Nintendo power subscription and one month it came with a dvd that just had trailers for a bunch of GameCube and DS games and the two that stick out in my mind to this day are Dawn of Sorrow and the (lmao) licensed movie tie in fantastic four game on the gamecube.
so while I still have not had the pleasure of what I’m sure is a fantastic movie tie in game I am at least glad Aria of Sorrow delivered on the dreams of my nine year old self lol.

Just think: in 14 years we'll all start dressing like soma cruz. I personally welcome fur coats, turtlenecks, and bell bottoms getting back in style.
Game for people who wear Hot Topic
Soma Cruz gains the ability to walk on water like a quarter into the game call him Soma Christ
Gaming’s greatest commentary on capitalist alienation. A story of a man driven to extreme lengths by his shitty fast food job, desperately trying to find any form of community as capitalism erases it.
