The moment, about an hour in, that you really see what type of puzzles Cocoon wants to propose you start to look differently at the game. But when you get to the second half of the game and the way those puzzles scale in subsequent iterations is not something I was expecting at all, while also really managing to not overstep that fine line between designing a puzzle that is satisfying, difficult and original enough to feel you smart, but not too difficult that will feel frustrating. Cocoon is full of moments like the first one.

It is not often you see something so well crafted that works even if having a design that anyone could think that it should break or get your game stuck easily. Coming from ex Playdead devs it doesn't have the narrative design of those games, but with how much thought and care was put into the game design itself, for me it doesn't need to match the former. Honestly, I find hard to say anything bad about this game; if you are even slightly interested in puzzle/adventure games this is a must.

Such a rollercoaster game, full of goty tier highs and I-don't-want-to-play-anymore lows. For example I found really frustrating to have visually impressive and extremely fun combats with bosses and Eikons (kudos to this part, because even if using QTEs they manage to feel so epic and keep you engaged) followed by way too extended downtime with filler quests and repetitive conversations. Also annoyed by the fact, perhaps due to the weight of carrying Final Fantasy as part of the title, to not really go full action/hack and slash as the game really screams it should be but instead take the soft action rpg route with half baked open areas with pretty much nothing interesting to find and basic rpg systems and quest design. Not sure what really happened there because I doubt anyone was pleased with the result of that part of the game; the moments FFXVI really shines are the more lineal dungeon parts and the story focused bits. I really liked Clive evolution throughout the game and most of the characters (even if I feel Jill was a missed opportunity) and specially during important combats the music is mindblowing at times.

It feels so bitter to talk about this game, mostly because I feel it has a lot more potential than what the final product really is. even if it is a good and recommendable game, but it could be much more than that.

Not the sequel I was expecting, in the best possible way. During the first half of the game it was being a sequel with a familiar feeling, more sequel in terms of themes than story (new characters, new scenarios), but with a somewhat more adult tone, not just because you are no longer controlling a teenager but a woman in her thirties, but also because what themes the game dabbles with. And that is what I could ask for: keeping the eerie adventure atmosphere of the first game but with some evolution in how it develops its new characters and a more mature script without falling in pretentiousness. And it achieves in this. But I should also mention that, besides what I said initially, it also ends up being a plot driven sequel, and playing the first game is key to have the whole context of what is going on.
