Going into this game, I half expected it not to live up to all the hype. From everything I had heard, this is universally considered the best game in the Metal Gear series, and I had just got off of playing MGS2, which I personally adored. So I had the bar set pretty high for this game. And honestly, it was not as good as I thought it would be: it was somehow better. I am still amazed with this game, several days removed from beating it. I'll start with the gameplay. Good lord is it fun. Every Metal Gear game up to this point has just been getting better and better in terms of the gameplay, and this is so far the cream of the crop. It takes everything from MGS2, and just makes it better and adds so much more. From the camo system which is a lot of fun to play around with, to the system where you have to manually heal injuries, to the even more improved CQC from MGS2, to camera not being fixed anymore, this game is a treat to play. The bosses are the best in the series so far, with many of them having so many different ways to take them down, and all being a great, fun challenge to test your skills. Now, for the story. This game has the best story in the Metal Gear series thus far. I love the setting of a jungle in the 60's and while the plot of Naked Snake having to stop basically a proto-Metal Gear is pretty repetitive at this point, what really holds it together are the characters, namely Snake, Volgin, and especially The Boss. The Boss, in my opinion, is the most interesting, well thought out, and just straight up best character in the Metal Gear series so far, and I don't know how they could make a better character, especially given this series' tendency to have characters that kind of annoy me(Meryl, Liquid Snake, Emma Emmerich). It's hard for me to talk about this game, because I truly believe that it is damn near perfect.

As the fourth game in my playthrough of the Metal Gear series, this game had a kind of high bar for it. I don't have that much to say about the original 2D Metal Gear games, but I will say that they are both very well maid, super innovative and ahead of their time experiences, that I would mostly recommend to hardcore Metal Gear fans. And while I enjoyed them for the most part, they have definitely been at the bottom of my rankings for the series thus far, kind of just being "not my thing". Metal Gear Solid 1, was a great game, with an effective, engaging story, especially for the time, and amazing gameplay that was so satisfying and tons of fun boss fights. Due to this, and the fact that I have heard some mixed opinions on this game as a whole, I was somewhat wary of Sons of Liberty. After playing it, it is my favorite game in the series thus far, no contest. First off, I need to address one of the biggest talking points surrounding this game: Raiden. From what I understand, it was not revealed before this game came out that Raiden was the main character, and due to this "false advertising", many fans were not happy with this game. While I understand that criticism, especially when it first launched, I believe that with time passing, this has become less of an issue for people, especially those who are just getting into the series, like myself. On Raiden, I liked him, I thought he was a decent enough character, and was easy to connect with, as he, like the player, was pretty much the only one not in on this grand conspiracy going on in the game. While I don't think he is a better character than Snake, I am fine with him as the protagonist. As for the story, I think it blows the first game out of the water. It takes everything from MGS1 and improves upon it, with first person aiming, WAY better guard AI plus a new alert system that makes stealth more challenging but still fun, and much improved gameplay when it comes to straight-up combat. For story, I also think it is better than MGS1. I love the themes and ideas discussed in the game, like manipulating pubic information and perception, artificial intelligence, and reality. It's even crazier that these are very relevant topics now, and this is a game from 2001. For characters, I really liked almost all of the new characters. The new villains, like Fortune, Vamp, and Solidus Snake are all great, especially Solidus who I feel is somewhat of an underrated Metal Gear character. And the boss fights are almost all amazing. Save for Snake's fight with Olga and the fight with the harrier, all the boss fights are fun, challenging, and include some cool mechanics, such as freezing bombs placed by Fatman or shooting out lights while fighting Vamp to make sure he can't use a powerful attack. However, the game wasn't perfect, as there were some annoying parts. The obvious one is when you have to escort Emma, and it really is a chore. Also, I personally didn't like the Big Shell as a setting as much as I loved Shadow Moses. Overall, this game blew me away, smashing every expectation I had for it, and set the the bar for the metal gear series going forward. It will be tough for a game to beat this one.

I have recently begun playing through the entire main metal gear series. I started with the 2D games, which I played through MGS3 in the HD collection. After those, I got to play my first ever 3D Metal Gear, kind of. My experience with this series has been minimal before, but it has always intrigued me. Before this playthrough, I had played a bit of MGSV and Metal Gear Rising, and enjoyed what little I played of them, while also being aware that they were fairly different to previous games especially rising. With that said, I overall loved my time with Metal Gear Solid. For a game with graphics that make the characters look like wooden blocks, they were able to make me care about these characters. The story was good. I don't think it as masterful as some others say it is, but to each their own. For me personally, I did not care at all about the romance between Snake and Meryl, and felt that it was corny in a bad way(unlike the other corny/cheesy moments that feel intentionally funny and campy) and also just very forced. It didn't help that Meryl's voice actor wasn't the best. The gameplay was honestly surprising in how well it has aged, though there were some clunky moments. I didn't care for any moment where you were forced to fight enemies head on, like in the elevator ambushes, and I really did not enjoy the final boss fight with liquid snake, which just felt like a clunky, unfair mess. Overall, the story was good, but had some parts I didn't care for, and some not so great performances, and the gameplay was incredible when it was more focused on stealth and the more intense and fun boss fights, like the Grey Fox fight and the Vulcan Raven fight. Plus, this game, along with the rest of the series from what I hear, does a great job of utilizing the video game medium for some cool fourth wall breaking moments. From psycho mantis reading your memory card and making your controller vibrate, to having to look on the back of your game case for a codec frequency(which was annoying considering I played it digitally on PS3 but eh), this game didn't always take itself so seriously and I really appreciate that.
