games i have complicated feelings for that are difficult to nail down

not really a list of hot takes, moreso a list of games i feel indecisive about or have gone back & forth with myself about whether i love or hate them

Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Adventure 2
this was one of the first games i've ever played, and there was a time in my life where it was my favorite game of all time, and there were also times in my life where i didn't like it at all. until a few years ago it was constantly fluctuating but now i appreciate its weird 2000s energy. this game is cool
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
this was my 2nd favorite metal gear game the first time i played thru the series. when i was younger i really loved how good it felt to play and the spectacle of it all and how emotional it made me feel. nowadays i think it's split about 50/50 the plotlines that are good extensions of the games before it and the ones that utterly ruin the overarching story. mgs as a whole would be so much more cohesive and so much less of a mess if this game didn't exist. at the same time, if this game didn't exist, we wouldn't have ninja raiden, which is a great extension to his story, or the entirety of chapter 4, which is one of the most powerful segments in the whole series. i wish the game didn't exist but i'm also glad it does
Jet Grind Radio
Jet Grind Radio
sometimes this game was a blast to play, and other times it was a complete chore, like just actual work to play the game. and sometimes the laborious parts were required to continue with the good parts. i do feel like the fun parts combined with the style this game has tower over the bad parts but this game also desperately needs a free play mode to just skate around without any objectives or a timer
Shenmue II
Shenmue II
the bigger scope compared to the first game is marvelous, the fact that it's 10x more punishing as a result is not. i kinda appreciate that the game is committed to making ryo eat shit at every corner for being an outsider with a frankly outrageous goal of wandering china until he finds his father's killer but it also kind of sucks
Resident Evil 6
Resident Evil 6
i mostly hate this game, but every now & then i go back to play it for a bit, and realize that it's actually really fun. it's probably closer to vanquish than it is to re4 and that's pretty cool. but that feeling never lasts the whole runtime
Mega Man Legends 2
Mega Man Legends 2
i go back and forth with whether i prefer MML1 or 2. the first is a game i firmly love and will never admit otherwise, and the highs of the sequel are so much greater than those of the first game. however, they also decided to fill this dungeons of this game with terrible gimmicky status effects that make them total shit. i want to consistently love this game they way i do the first! but it has the worst water dungeon in any adventure game ever!
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
this game probably fits the list better than any other game for me. i am more confused about my thoughts for this game than i am about my weird fucked up gender identity. i have no idea how anybody in their right mind praised this game when it released for its "immersive qualities". bethesda should be ashamed of the trash they've created
System Shock 2
System Shock 2
i love the atmosphere and the forward-thinkingness of this game but it's so messy as an rpg, and it's such a pervasive problem that it partly negates the positives in my opinion.
