A lot more fun than I had expected.

The last Assassin's Creed game I beat was Unity, so I've been out of the scene for a few years. That game sucked, thankfully this one doesn't.

Just like Homer's Odyssey, you go island hopping in search of your family. Sometimes it seems like you're getting further than your goal, other times, closer. The fact the Assassin's Creed series is now open world means the ebb and flow is part of the experience.

Kassandra, who is the canon of the two selectable protagonists, is really likeable. It's a nice change of pace from the string of bad AC protagonists we've had lately (Connor, Arno, Jacob and Evie). The modern day protagonist introduced in Origins, Layla Hassan, is absolutely not. Thankfully you only have to deal with her for like five minutes at a time, then she goes away for another 20 hours.

Probably the most common criticism I see of this game is "bloat", to which I can agree. There are plenty of missions that'll tickle your fancy despite being (mostly) fetch quests, escort missions or hit jobs. This isn't Witcher 3, but, it's action adventure with RPG elements which defines a lot of games with bloat.

The cities are numerous but can also be tedious. Aesthetically some cities stand out from others or have their own "thing" that they do to set them apart, but functionally there is very little making each city unique. Ditto with the copypaste forts and castles that feel straight out of Just Cause 2.

After beating the main game, the Ultimate™ edition (which includes the AC3 Remaster) and DLCs will give you another 50 or so hours of playtime to fully complete. I've got 65 hours in and still have at least another 40 left on account of all the expansions left to do.

Speaking of which the story's ending, particularly the modern day ending and the canon run with Deimos dead, is incredibly unsatisfying. I went a different route, had a full house in the end, and thought it was a better ending. However it's the journey, not so much the destination, that make the game a good time. Your choices throughout the game matter and that's pretty neat if not necessarily novel these days.

It doesn't look like AC will ever go to the basics of I, II and Brotherhood, but it's clear the incremental improvements from each successive Assassin's Creed game culminate into this fine new formula.

Also this game got me through two weeks of having Covid, so I'll always remember it fondly.
