a fair attempt to reinvigorate the AC formula. it keeps the core loop of "explore the question marks on the map", which is good if that's what you're in the mood for from a game. the new combat and RPG systems are perfectly fine. the characters and the revenge story are pretty good. i did miss the dialogue options that emerged in future entries in the AC series, even if they just provided the "illusion of choice" - for me i didn't feel as immersed because i was a static observer in the story, rather than participating in it. the thing this does better than its two sequels is that has a shorter runtime - sometimes you can have too much of a good thing, and this game doesn't suffer from that!
