The best introduction I could have had to Dragon Quest. The characters, setpieces, and story are all loveable in their fairytale simplicity. The twists and turns are so grand and sincere in their presentation its hard not to be invested, even if you can see them coming miles away. Combat-wise, the lack of random encounters is seriously the only reason I had the patience to go through to the end. Party member dynamics are just complex enough to keep you engaged in the occasional farming sessions.

The third act/post-game was rife with grinding for xp and items, but watching the numbers go up was rewarding enough to keep me going to max level, 100% side quests, and the final boss. The post-post game (Tickington stuff) presents a brick wall of a difficulty curve, forcing you to grind for the necessary items to even survive the attacks from the super-bosses. This level of grinding and mastery is a bit too much for me, but I recognize that these extras are really only there for a small niche.

As a new DQ fan, the Tickington quests bored me to death, but I acknowledge that they would be pretty fun for a series veteran. Overall, 100 hours of a good time is enough for me to recommend this, at least through the first credits-roll.
