An otherwise great game made worse by what came after it. I can’t even imagine how radical Demon’s Souls felt to the people experiencing it when it first released. The Fromsoft games have buoyed my interest in video games for the past decade, and this game still retains a lot of the groundwork DNA that would be refined and evolved in subsequent games. Suffers from a number of systems that feel either incomprehensible or unnecessarily limiting (and that are tellingly not present in future games). Pretty easily the worst collection of bosses.

Really fun and charming, makes me wish we got more idiosyncratic franchise entries like this from Nintendo. You can sometimes tell that the content here was largely untouched from its original 90s release, some sequences are unnecessarily clunky. But the combat system and the humor keep things fresh throughout.

Very fun! I had no hesitations I would enjoy this, and it largely lived up to my expectations. The wonder seed mechanic injects some appreciated variety into every level, on top of some already great level design. In my heart I’m still a 3D Mario guy, and this doesn’t blow you away with anything, but it’s a highly enjoyable game nonetheless.
