capcom got us americans good by putting all the decent stuff in the first game, then blocking off all the raw goat kino swag stuff to go exclusively into the second game
throughout ace attorney, there is the “bubbly loud girl ” (BLG we will call them) character to assist the main character. maya, trucy, athena (kind of, i guess she’s a protagonist but also there’s too much going on to make her actually feel like one). kay is also one of these. but honestly, i think this BLG tope works least well with him. her antics and jokes just don’t bounce off him that well and make their relationship feel not that special when it’s easily compared to other BLG. to the point that i think it actually tanks the overall quality of investigations— not that this story is kino regardless, it’s a fun little game, but it feels like nothing special, and i think kay’s characterization is no small part in that.
i think miles needed a mean girl or a girl who makes little to no jokes but has her own kind of quirk about her. basically franziska. they are funny all the time and gumshoe could have been the government mandated joke machine.

capcom created the first game with a negative amount of soul in it
the fact they walked back phoenix’s entire character development from aa4 to make him the main character instead of trying a little harder to get audiences to like apollo is probably the biggest writing crime this series committed . the game sucks ass also.

miles is established as someone who will do anything to get a guilty verdict, possibly even sending innocent people to jail. yet throughout the series, we never experience this vicious implication and it basically goes away after this game. you might call this poor writing or poor foresight from the writers, but personally, miles is my meow meow and i absolve him of his past sins so he can take on the new role of being phoenix’s pillow princess. amen.

i spent half this game wondering which portland this game takes place in so when we got the back cove (maine) namedrop i was like thank god… if this took place in oregon it would have ruined my immersion

never have i experienced a game that was so bad it actually exhausted me. i was ready to make a long post with every issue i had with the plot/pacing/characters/mysteries but as the last chapter dragged on with its obvious unsubtle twists i realized i would have spent longer writing the post than they spent writing this awful game
