This game completely demolishes the first game in terms of gameplay and presentation. Everything that was clunky about the first game's combat is practically gone and you actually feel like a badass when you control Kiryu wrecking everyone's shit.

Note: I have played both the English dub and the fan-made Restoration patch that restores the Japanese voice acting and retranslates the game.

While the game does have it's fair share of jank that takes some time to get used to, I do genuinely enjoy Yakuza for what it is and most people over-exaggerate its flaws.

The original game does have its fair share of aspects that are better than in its remake, Yakuza Kiwami. I think the story pacing is better, there's way less bloat than in the remake.

Although Kiryu with no upgrades isn't that fun, the upgrades and Komaki's teachings really will help you enjoy the game a lot more, especially the move that let's you kick from the back and the throws after a finishing blow. But overall, I really enjoyed how simple and straightforward this game is compared to the future entries and I don't believe Kiwami will ever replace it no matter how much SEGA tries to push it.

As someone who played the original and loved it, while I think this is a great game, there's still pet peeves I have that make me prefer the original. However, I also think both games stand on their own.

I'm a huge fan of how the remake expanded on Luis as a character and he really grew on me compared to his short screen time in the original. I also like the parry system implemented although it can be a bit touch-and-go sometimes.

I do have a lot of pet peeves about the game though. I feel Leon's controls aren't good enough to deal with the Ganados who are more aggressive than the original, there are moments where due to a lack of I-frames, Leon is prone to getting stun-locked or hit by enemies from behind which can be obnoxious and annoying. I also dislike how staggers are scaled in difficulties, Professional will make you shoot Ganados several times to stagger them unlike the original.

Overall, I think as a remake, the game is fantastic but I have issues with the gameplay that make me prefer the original.
