So when this came out in 2017, I was pretty busy with the constant stream of games coming out, like Sonic Mania, Mario Odyssey, etc. That and I didn't (and still don't really) play games on PC, at all. But, unlike Undertale, I do remember watching the occasional Youtube video on it here and there. Basically, the only things I really remembered at all going into this play through was Yuri’s death, that the game played with the game files and Monika’s room. Going into it, I thought it would just be a formality to kinda just finally play a game that I had always been pretty interested in playing, especially in the more recent few years as my taste in games have expanded. I was pretty shocked at how fresh the main game was to me, despite me thinking I knew the twist. The way this game absolutely nails horror is one of my favorite in any type of media. My favorite type of horror is the kind that isn't really overtly scary, just unsettling and disturbing when things are slightly off and left unexplained for the most part. Things like Kubrik’s Shinning or The Enigma of Amigara Falls. Where your imagination just runs wild as to try to come up with answers and in turn just freaks itself out even more. That was how I felt for the first run through of this game and absolutely loved it. Not to mention how the game uses every tool at its disposal to use the medium of Visual Novels and Video Games to its maximum capacity. I don't think there is any other Video Game, let alone piece of media that I have personally experienced that commits so hard to doing everything it possibly can to maintain its immersion. It just simply does things a book or film or play could never accomplish because of the unique properties of the medium. The main game is fantastic, head to toe. Would it be better played on PC than the Switch? Of course, but they made the best of what they could and its still is a must play (plus the physical Switch extras are great). That said, I was loving the game so much that I 100% it because I just wasn't ready to move on just yet. I thought each playthrough to get all the unlockable art would eventually start to deteriorate my love for the games’s elements, as I started to pick apart the game’s structure. And in ways, yeah a little of the Magic of that first playthrough is lost. But in turn, there is so much more hiding in the game that I just wouldn't have experienced with just the one playthrough. New terrifying moments and glitches would just start popping out of nowhere and they would make me feel so uneasy and I would start to tear up, all the way up to my last run through. Everytime I felt like I understood the game, a new anomaly, or just something slightly off would peak its head. It’s awesome. As for the Plus content though, I do kinda like the side stories. It kinda answers the question of “What if this was actually a normal visual novel?” and has some much improved writing and characterizations, which is obviously very intentional. What I am not super down with though is the very end 100% stuff. Long story short, I don't really like thr idea of over explaining an already mysterious topic. It gives too many answers away, and in turn answers makes the game more comfortable, which can kill chilling moments. Its like what Aliens did to Alien, and made the Xenomrophs less creepy, because you knew more about them. Overall, its not that egregious about it and is obviously trying to set up whats to come. But I still think its a blemish on an already great concept thats best left ignored (all the unlockable images are great though, there worth going for.) DDLC is definitely still more than necessary to play, even if you watched a you've video of it and think you know it, its just a different experience. (Also, shoutout to Dan Salvato for giving New Jersey another great artist)
