Plug a 6 button controller into port 1, and have any controller plugged into port 2. Before you do anything, highlight Options.

Hold down Mode on controller 1, then Up and C on controller 2. Keep all these buttons held and enter the options menu with Start on controller 1.

If the menu says "OPTION" and not "OPTIONS", you did it right. You've activated 6 button mode, and you no longer have to get the spacing down to attack your enemies with melee attacks. You can just do it by pressing B, because shurikens are mapped to Y and Z.

You're welcome.

Not many games out there where the plot is so cracked out that the localization threw it out and made up a new one.

Also not many games where out of a selection of 4 weapons and 16 unique combinations, the most powerful attack in the game is your co-op partner's face.

ALSO not many games where Expert mode gives you a 7 phase boss fight with attacks you never saw in any of the lower difficulties. One of said phases being it morphing into a giant fucking pistol.

ALSO not many games where a miniboss you fought earlier escapes into deep space so that it could re-challenge you with a bullet hell survival challenge that can last up to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The developers just did whatever the fuck they wanted and it shows. Every design decision in this game, regardless of whether it was fully realized or not, had the boldness to try. And I think it succeeded in every regard, because even when it makes no goddamn sense, it's just fun.

Treasure games are something else.

(Also, did you know there's a secret slide tackle attack? Input ⬅️↙️⬇️↘️➡️ + B and it'll push away / tear through most enemies. Does more damage than the regular slide, and it's really important to learn if you want to stand a chance in the harder difficulties.)

So far, enjoying this one a lot more than I thought I would. Started it based on a friend's recommendation, spent most of my time with it figuring out how the hell I was supposed to comfortably map this game's controls.

I respect the hell out of what this game was going for, and found the dialogue to be surprisingly charming in its snark... but, man, this is one of the hardest to handle games I've ever played.

It doesn't feel so much like it's badly implemented, and more that I just... don't get it, yet. And that's fine! With a little practice, I'm sure it'll feel intuitive, genius, and like some kind of hidden holy grail of a game that I wish more games would control like. I know I'm not usually one for the conventions of FPS games, so this was a nice change of pace in movement that I do honestly wish more developers would strive for.

But right now, getting shot from the sides makes me freak out, fail miserably, and take a minute to consider jumping off of the nearest bridge.

I like that, though. It just makes me want to learn it even more.

IDK I just like it

Backflip kicks make this game. If you don't know how to do that, press up+kick in the air at any time.

You could already be in the middle of a kick animation, and it still registers - that'll just spring you off of an enemy's face and flip back. So much movement!

I honestly liked this game more than I did the first time, coming back to it after a few years.

If you step back and stop looking at it in the context of it being a Mega Man Zero/ZX entry, it.... actually does a lot of things that the original series would have. Specific, but unique weapons (through the numerous transformations you get), more powerful weaponry with more straightforward usages, a better sense of experimentation with the order you gain weaponry changing your chances in the stages themselves.... and MUCH less padding and getting lost between stages compared to the first game.

The story is still dumb as hell and rife with aimless exposition, with a bunch of brand new "who the fuck" characters being dropped on your lap out of nowhere... but I think as a game it's plenty enjoyable. The bosses are fun, and the forms are neat to mess around with. It's also a Mega Man game, so that means a great soundtrack is a given!

So it's alright. Not my favorite, but not really as bad as I felt it was the last time I gave it a shot.

The most unfortunate localization name to ever grace an NES game.

Lovely soundtrack though. I think it's really cool how they have that little guitar-pluck sound in Stage 1's theme.

One of the surprisingly common occurrences of a Konami game being better on NES than in the arcades.

Found this out in the wild while on vacation, tried it out, and was sorely disappointed that it didn't have super shots. Or boss fights. What the hell? Like, half of the cool things the game had going for it were new to the NES version. Managing your super shots and knowing when to fire them to pierce through armors and melt whatever is in front of you felt so... natural to the game's essence that I honestly couldn't believe it wasn't there from the start.

I guess it's impressive that it's a 1983 entry though.
Oh well. Love this game, still haven't actually gotten around to finishing it.

It has Tekkaman Blade in it so who the fuck cares who else is in this game?

It's been ages since I've replayed this one, but I still remember how dope the ending was

I would literally kill for a hack that disables the 3rd gear song though

You could rip the kraken guy out of the background before he gets to stab you with his tentacles, and then take off 2/3rds of his health bar with 1 swift combo just for even daring to attack you

10/10

This game kinda makes you feel like when you get a bad subweapon in Castlevania by accident and waste the III

Except that's all the time, and you don't have a main weapon

the wiggly burp got me fucked up

I loved this game but hate its controller support.
My hands are way too shaky for mouse and keyboard controls, so I just used a key mapper to play the game before. I got very particular with how to work everything, and I was able to do just about as much as anyone else.

Once they added thorough controller support.... that autodetected when it's plugged in... and works with any controller, Dinput or Xinput.... my key mappings did not work. Actions that I had conveniently set up to 1 button now took up 2. Smart cursor wasn't an option anymore, it was a requirement; the game literally would not let me turn it off. The D-pad and analog stick do the same thing, for fuck's sake! No meaningful mapping options at all!

If they were going to take away so many of your options like that, they shouldn't have had controller support at all. :/

Oh well. I heard the update's great. I bought one of those Steam controllers that read as mouse and keyboard anyway, so I'll probably be able to pick it up again.

This game gets so goddamn hard that I've taken almost an hour to beat just one stage before.

It's a puzzle game. That's a good thing.

10/10.
