super fucking mario bros.
this fucking game
despite its reputation of being a classic, the only thing i can give this game points for is anything but the game design.

the gameplay and movement feel pretty alright. i can accomplish most of what I want to. though, i don't know if it's the game or something, but any device i've ever played this game on seems to drop inputs (namely jumps) from time-to-time, which is infuriating enough on the later levels. it feels just fine, regardless.

here's my main gripe: the game feels very arbitrary and artificially difficult. it's almost like some mechanics are just there to say "fuck you" or "this is the way it is because we said so". the timer ticks down way too fast. you can't backtrack. grabbing fire flowers as small mario reverts them to plain old mushrooms. getting hit as fire mario brings you back to small mario instantly. getting power-ups doesn't grant you invincibility frames. green paratroopas turn towards mario when hitting the ground for some reason. lakitu respawns, i guess. THE SPRINGS. i could go on with how many things are here that don't need to be. it's bad, it's really bad.

i went into this game saying "i won't use restore points."
then i went to "okay i'll only use them at the start of each world."
then to "okay at the start of each level."
"...okay i'll just do one in the middle of this level."
if you don't have a nostalgic bias, i guarantee you'll feel the same way. if not, then i'd believe you belong in some kind of psychiatric ward.

i don't mean to complain, i mean the game is pretty old and it still clings to arcade mechanics, but i can't say it holds up. all i can recommend to you is to play until you die, then drop it and never pick it up again. it isn't worth it.

spelunky 2 is good all-round.

i was never really one for ambient soundtracks, so i'm kind of disappointed that the bangin' style of the first game's ost didn't make a return. that's the note i'll start off with here.

the gameplay, like spelunky 1, is all there, if not more. the same emergent gameplay, traps, unforgiving difficulty, it's all back and spiffed up! love all that. the game also introduces branching paths as well, but, i'll be honest: why would you take jungle over volcana? or temple over tidepool? they all lead to the same path in the end, so taking the more difficult path is never really an option, unless you're looking for something specific from those areas. the choice seems obvious, so it really baffles me why it's a choice at all. i dunno, maybe i just don't get it?

other than that, the game is great. really fun to play with friends, so give it a shot!

personal gen 3 bias aside, i believe that pokemon peaked here. i think that pokemon heartgold and soulsilver were the best of the franchise. while the newer games aren't bad (most of them anyway), i think this was the one to truly give me the most joy i've ever felt with a pokemon game.

if you're looking for an entry point, i'd say this is it.
