i walked into the trees sega multi controller in hand and peyote toiling in stomach. panzer dragoon saga's reputation precedes itself; the mysticism of it's legendary lostness already has a backlash. it's artifact nature free to be understood and misunderstood in the digital age, "i kinda understand why this was mostly forgotten by everyone except for a few guys with nostalgia". a panzer dragoon rpg to rival FFVII, the sort of desperate hail mary that could've felt as ridiculous during gestation to it's creators as it did to the dominating sony fanboy faction during the great console wars of the late 20th century. "Mysterious ancient civilizations are the hot new thing in gaming. At E3, ruins are all the rage", a Verge article in 2016. well here is a genuine hieroglyph of a bygone era, source code lost to time, DNA that died forever as the last gasp of the Sega Saturn. science can play puppeteer like jurassic park, but the circumstances and values of the culture that produced this will never come back
it was doomed from the start. inspired by lynch's box office failure Dune and with art by moebius, panzer had hardly any anime conventions to appeal to the largely otaku base of the saturn. like most of Sega's successes, that it's so good feels like an accident, a case of the parents handing the kid carte blanche money to fuck off while they fight. it wasn't nearly enough to rescue the dying console but if it were i wouldn't be able to pretend it's some ancient chozo / sheikah stone tablet like i do
